Education Depicted Through Movies

As we go through this pandemic that happens all over the world, we tend to do anything just to fight our boredom. Watching movies is a great way to eliminate boredom. Netflix as a source of different movies can help you learn a lot. It may change the way you see things, it can change your attitude, it can be the reason for you to be inspired doing other things beyond your limitations.

A movie titled "SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME" was based on the inspiring true story of international art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear), who befriends a homeless man (Djimon Hounsou) in hopes of saving his struggling marriage to Debbie (Renée Zellweger), a woman whose dreams will lead all three of them on the most remarkable journey of their lives.

This is a movie where you can learn the importance of being a honest partner. It can also change the way you see things. Those negative sides can turn into positive. Changes on our attitude are a bit hard to see but time will come that you'll realize the difference between our past and present characteristics. This changes can happen when we are in pain, when we are in guilt, when we are in our deepest and hardest challenges in life. This movie is worth watching because you'll learn many other things that you won't expect.

Another movie from Netflix that I am highly recommending is the movie titled "100 Meters" that is another yet based on a true story of a Spanish man with Multiple sclerosis who tried to finish an iron-man triathlon after being told he wouldn't make it 100 meters. A movie that will tell us to have more determination of what we want to do in life. Never get depress for what would others say, instead make it as your inspiration to do what the others think you cannot. Courage and trust in yourself will bring you to your astonishing success. The movie also portrays how to build a positive relationship with our father-in-law. In a very unexpected situations, we have to adapt in able to learn new things in life.

It is okay to binge watch during this pandemic but don't ever forget being physically fit. After watching try to do some exercise, if possible, invite your family on doing it and have some bonding. Don't pressure yourself on doing heavy load of school requirements, take a deep breath and if you need to relax just watch this movies on Netflix and I am sure that your determination and inspiration in doing those requirements will surely be boosted. Always remember that life is a continuous learning and we should admit that nobody is perfect and at least we tried to be.

Film franchises and TV series you can binge watch during quarantine.

In this collectively traumatic experience we are going through due to the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone is hooked to our screens to binge watch films or series to keep ourselves sane while we are staying at home due to the widescale lockdown. From animes, kdrama, cartoons, iconic film franchises and good classic western series, I am sure there is something there that will let you have an escape from reality.

If you are looking for something to watch, let me recommend some from my personal playlist:

Marvel Cinematic Universe

This blockbuster hit franchise broke many box office records and stole millions of hearts from fans around the world. Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU is divided into solo films which establish the background for each character and story arc that conjunct into each other in the Avengers film series. If you think MCU is just about goody two shoes heroes kicking bad guys asses, well you're wrong. These superhero films explored the personal and political struggles of the Avenger, earth's mightiest heroes as they fight evil here on earth and worlds beyond. Marvel films are not just superhero films. If you're looking for a fantasy, you can watch Thor films. When you are in the mood for some teenage drama, Spider-Man movies are perfect for you. Looking for some space opera with old school comedy? Watch Guardians of the Galaxy.

Tom and Jerry

Remember when times are simpler? You will wake up everyday to eat sandwich, drink your milk and just watch good old Tom and Jerry. This quarantine would be perfect to reminisce this childhood favorite of many generations since the 50s. Tom and Jerry cartoons are plain and simple yet they nrver fail to make us laugh and forget our problems. A good classic like Tom and Jerry is a reminder to us that kids are never gone, they just grow up.

Sherlock (BBC)

This crime and mystery BBC series starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes became a pop culture icon in the recent years due to its exceptional storytelling and ensemble cast. Unlike previous adaptation of Sherlock Holmes which are usually set in the late 1800's or early 1900's, the BBC hit TV series is set in modern day London where crimes are widespread which compelled Sherlock and his partner John Watson to solve these mysteries roaming around the city.

Avatar

The Last Airbender A phenomenal childhood classic for millennials and Gen Z kids, ATLA is no doubt one of the most influential series to date. The series is set on an Asiatic world divided by four elements: Water, Earth, Fire and Air. In the Avatar universe, the world is devastated by conquest of Fire Nation against the Water Tribe, Air Nomads and Earth Kingdom. Only the avatar, Aang the last airbender, master of all elements can stop them. Avatar is not just an innocent cartoon because it tackles political issues such as imperialism, sexism, racism, genocide, activism, and cultural diversity.

So that's all for my playlist so far. What's yours? Drop your recommendations now on the comment section!

Movies and Shows to Watch During the Quarantine Period

The quarantine period is still on going and most of us have nothing to do or we did everything to keep us occupied and all of us are getting bored and going crazy for just staying in our houses. I personally love going outdoors and going out once in a while to shop and to treat myself, but during this quarantine period I find myself doing none of those. Instead of complaining on how this quarantine will never end, let us look on movies and shows you should watch.

1. Clueless (1995)

This is personally one of my favorite movies. As with the movie title the main character Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone, is a girl who is clueless and doesn’t even know that she was falling for Josh, played by Paul Rudd. This movie is great if you are into romance and a little bit of comedy. This movie actually made me clueless because I was wondering why Christian, played by Justin Walker, is not getting the signs Cher is giving and to only find out he was gay and I did not expect that. I was totally clueless! There is even a game where you play a story in an app called “Episode” called “Clueless: School’s Out” where Josh has broken up with Cher and you are her half-sister, while both of you are going to an internship with Donna Chung.

2. Totally Spies (2001 – 2013)

If you haven’t watched or even heard about Totally Spies, then your childhood was not that fun. I mean this show is very unique with each episode being a different plot. It TV show is all about 3 teenage girls, Sam, Alex, and Clover, who were recruited by WOOP to become international spies. They take their orders but Jerry, which is their supervisor or leader. What makes this show a masterpiece is with how unique it is, they have their own spy gadgets which is handed my G.L.A.D.I.S. Each episode there is always a villain and ends with the villain captured. Let us also not forget that the girls have their own villain which is Mandy.

3. Home Alone (1990)

This is one of my favorite childhood movies. I remember saying how smart this kid was. If I was in his position I would be scared to death especially home invasion is one of my scariest fears up to this day. The best scene is when the invaders keep trying to get the boy even though they have been outsmarted many times. This movie is for you if you want nostalgia, comedy, and some family moments.

4. Parent Trap

This is an Disney original movie and is a remake. This is the version I have grew up with and is the best for me. This movie got me thinking wow they are twins and all my life I thought they were real and are really twins in real life, but no, Lindsey Lohan is only 1 and does not have a twin. Movie editing was actually great in the 1990’s. Let us not forget the infamous Meredith, our childhood villain. It is a good thing the twins tried to bring back together their mom and dad. This movie is for the nostalgia seekers.

5. Freaky Friday

Yes, this is another Disney original movie and another Lindsey Lohan movie, but hey this is a great movie. This movie is fun to watch especially the part when Anna and Tess switched lives. Each character get to understand their lives and understand each other. There may be up and downs but family will always come first. This movie is for people who love old Disney movies and of course nostalgia.

6. Escape the Night

Now this is an YouTube Original. This stars Joey Graceffa as the main character and famous YouTube stars as guests. The plot starts with a story line of a decade and it is like an escape room but all but 2 YouTube stars will survive and the rest will die. Each episode is a different scenario and each ending either with a death, 2 deaths, or no one dying. This is for people who love escape rooms like me.

7. Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars is one long storyline. It has 7 seasons and the story is that the main character, Alison DeLaurentis is a “rebel” teen who is wild and this is what leads to her disappearance. Throughout the seasons everyone of her friends, Emily, Aria, Hannah and Spencer, are being harassed by a person called A. They have accused a lot of people of being A but no one knows who she/he really is. It is the goal of the friends to find out who she/he is and to find Alison. This TV Show is for people who love mystery, drama, and a little bit of romance.

"The paradoxical idea of attaining a happier life and how to withstand these beliefs."

The Revolting Truth About Happiness by Theserenefae

If people ask you about your vision of a happier life we automatically envision ourselves having more money, true love, a better job, Instagram-worthy vacations, etc. But let me break this to you this, According to Dr. Laurie Santos, Professor of Psychology at Yale University and the voice behind The Happiness Lab podcast, "Most of the goals we think would make us happy do not really make us happy." And why is that? Simple, being happy is all in our minds. The human mind ploys us with these lenses on how we envision ourselves and our lives to be happy. The perception of "having" or "gaining" is the exact opposite of what will truly make our lives better. So how can we really be "happy"?

• Seek happiness inside you. This is a quintessential reason for our vision of happiness: misconceptions about having a lot of money would make me happy; owning this and that would make me happy; entering a relationship would make me happy. This is not the case, if you want to be truly happy with your relationship, you have to be already happy on your own. If you want satisfaction from others, you have to be satisfied with yourself. And so on.

• Fill that hole righteously We all have that tiny hole inside our hearts, tampering it with temporary band-aids. Fill this hole with purpose. Have you ever heard about The Three "M's"— Master, Mission, and Mate? Define who will be your Master, is it God? If that's so, your Mission could be following his words and will. Mate would be the last for they will be the best companion to fulfill your mission. Now hear me out, it is important to do this accordingly. We often times jumble it or invert it which can lead to failures.

• Give gifts to others. The wonderful grace in giving. There’s nothing like the rush of pure joy when you get a chance to give. However, this may not be something that we're used to. But apparently, openhandedness is our soul's true shape. As Eugene Peterson put it, "Giving is what we do best. It is the air into which we were born." This doesn't necessarily mean we have to give away our stuff but we can also present love, kindness, gratefulness, etc. in our own simplest ways to anyone such as giving time, encouragement, helping hand, or even forgiveness. Try giving and you'll receive inconceivable gifts in return.

• Savor moments. Savoring deeply intensifies our positive emotions while doing something that we love the most by simply stepping outside of the experience to review and appreciate the moment. You can practice this by having a delicious meal, reading a good book, or any activity that you enjoy and love. It can also be enhanced by sharing these experiences with others, appreciating such amazing moments, or staying present the entire time.

• Choose to Love Deeper Today's society relentlessly pressures all of us to have this "perfect" lifestyle such as pursuing careers that drain you, finding value through virtual world and purchases, letting achievements become your whole identity, and yet after all that you still feel empty and failure inside. Consumption is just skin deep—a shallow perception of happiness. Deep life brings the best out of us and others. It is about nourishing what you already have, focusing on the relationships than material wealth, becoming vulnerable at times, and being self-aware.

• Understand that Sufferings and Pain are part of Human Being. Always remember that loneliness and sufferings are inevitable. That is completely how life goes. You may be happy for a moment or a month but sooner or later great tribulation will start to kick in. Combat despair with graciousness. Count all the blessings that you have (and will have in near future, claim it!) by writing it down on a piece of paper or typing on your phone. Viola! an instant boost for happiness. We all know the fact that this superficial happiness won't work, but why do I keep on wanting? I already have all this wisdom about how to be happy for ages, but why can't I apply it to my own life?

First, you have to understand that simply knowing doesn't change your behavior. Care to realize that all the tips that I have mentioned are all verbs? Because at the end of the day, it is all about how you choose to be happy and initiate actions towards success. Know, reflect, visualize, believe, and do something about it. All of these are Actions! This is the secret of all the happiest and most influential people in the world—actions. Furthermore, do know that some of these tips do not work instantly most of the time. It requires a lot of time, motivation, consistency, and effort. I do know it's easier said than done. Take each of them slowly, one step at a time.

If it wasn’t for pain, I wouldn’t be alive. It may sound contradictory, but it’s true. Pain reminds me that I can feel, along with other emotions. Pain reminds me that I can heal, just like how I did in the past. Pain reminds me that I am strong and I can do better. It reminds me that life can be bitter, and it is up to us to make it a little sweeter (or saltier, depending on what the person wants).

With this epiphany, I take pain in a positive light. It’s normal that it can break me and make me want to stay in bed all day, but having someone or something remind me that there is hope is enough. It’s normal that I cry my heart out, but it’s important to remember that there’s a calm after the storm. If it wasn’t for pain, I wouldn’t be who I am now. It has shaped me and how I look at things. It has changed the way I approach circumstances that can challenge me and my beliefs.

Pain, back then, made me cower in the dark. Pain used to be my biggest fear, and I used to do my best to avoid pain. However, I realized that avoiding pain is like avoiding life. Because of how I wanted to protect myself, I closed myself off to people and opportunities. I used to tell myself that “this will end badly”, or “this is going to hurt in the end”. I always focused on how much pain I might endure in the end that I forgot to enjoy the process.

It’s inevitable, you see? Endings, most of the time, may hurt. It’s natural for us to grow attached to someone or something, and their disappearance might bring us a lot of pain. However, one should always remember that the pain is a reminder of how close you became, how many memories you had. If it wasn’t for pain, life would be pointless. If it wasn’t for pain, we would be nothing.

19 year old pharmacy student-businesswoman from Pampanga. I, Kimberly Chaile D. Ocampo, started planning my own business back when I was 18 years old. Despite being a student, that did not stop me to work and start up something for me to earn my own money. I was also influenced by my parents who are both hands on when it comes to the marketing world. I have decided to start my own mini restaurant/fast food restaurant recently (Feb 2020) and it was named as “Hungry Hubb”. From the word itself which is “Hungry” we thought of something that would give people the biggest hint that we sell food.

Because of the sudden quarantine, every store was forced to close for our own safety that is why there was a sudden decrease on our sales. But Hungry Hubb managed to survive by focusing on online selling and social media promotion. Our best seller would be Shawarma salad which is mediterranean style. We add authentic Garlic sauce to our shawarma (Which is available in Wrap, Salad, & Rice). Every product that we sell are very affordable and delicious. Our starting price is only 50php. (Shawarma Wrap). For Shawarma Salad (70php). We also have Milktea (60php) and Rice meals such as Lechon Kawali, Chicken barbecue, and Pork Barbecue for only 120 pesos.

And of course, I wouldn’t make it up this far without the help of my family and friends who have supported be from the very start. This is an open letter and inspirational especially to students that want to earn their own money. Nothing is impossible. You just have to be determined enough to turn your plans into reality.
