Not to be confused with the private all-boy grade school and high school in San Juan, Xavier University takes the best of Jesuit education and brings it to Mindanao. Before making it your alma mater, we list down all you need to consider about the university:
History of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan
Lauded as the first university in Mindanao, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan was also the first to be granted the University Status among all Ateneo schools in the Philippines. Like its other counterparts, the school is run by the Society of Jesus. It was founded in 1933 by Fr James TG Hayes SJ, the first Bishop and Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro. From then, the small building holding 17 high school male students would expand into several buildings along Corrales Street with 614 students in just 11 years. In 1938, the college department was added offering courses in Liberal Arts, Education, and Commerce.
Unfortunately, this would all come to an abrupt close due to World War II. In 1944, the school was reduced to rubble after the American bombings in Cagayan de Oro. Thankfully, the school’s reconstruction was quickly seen to and was reopened in 1946. This was later followed by the addition of the Ateneo de Cagayan Graduate School, the College of Agriculture, and the College of Law.
In honor of St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit missionary and companion of St. Ignatius Loyola (Founder of the Society of Jesus), Ateneo de Cagayan was renamed “Xavier University” in 1958. In response to the alumni’s wishes, the school became known as “Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan.”
