Writing in Cursive Makes Us Smarter, Study Says

Bye, keyboard!

Doing all sorts of school work using the computer is super convenient and faster compared to writing them manually on paper (and using cursive handwriting to boot!). We can all agree on that, right?

But before you ditch #TeamPenAndPaper for #TeamKeyboard, hear this study out. Apparently, writing in cursive makes us smarter!

According to a study by University of Washington professor Virginia Berninger, a few grade six students they've been closely monitoring for five years proved that more words were written (faster, too!) and more ideas were expressed when they wrote using a pen and paper more than when they used a keyboard.

Not only that, there are various studies that prove the cognitive benefits writing in cursive has:

1. Increased brain activity.

2. Long-term information retention.

3. Increased ability to generate ideas.

4. Better thought organization.

Sure, writing using a keyboard can help get things done faster, but writing your thoughts or notes manually in cursive helps you understand it better.
