Wockee Talkie

We chatted with the JabbaWockeeZ, DJ Rashida, and Billy Crawford a day before their explosive Ayala Malls show.

How did you guys meet and form the group?
Phil Tayag:
We've been friends, some over 10 years. Kevin, Joe, and I are from Sacramento. We've known each other since I was in middle school. We met Chris and Rainen in 2000 or 2001.
Chris Gatdula:
Rainen and I are from San Diego. But it took nine years in the making for all this.
Phil:
We decided to put the group together in 2003. Phi and Ben became additions to the group like a year or two years after.

Who came up with the name and the mask concept?
Rynan Paguio:
The name was brought up by Joe, Kevin, and Phil a long time ago.
Kevin Brewer:
Lewis Carroll made the name [from a poem called "Jabberwocky"].
Phil:
The mask idea came from the Greeks, where the actors just used music and body language to express themselves. As far as us applying it to the dances, our friend Gary Kendall was already doing a mask-type concept before. Joe was the one who wanted to apply it to the Jabbawockeez.
