Kathryn Bernardo recently ticked off one item from her bucket list—she took a pottery class with some of her closest friends! As seen on her Instagram post on Sunday, February 21, 2021, Kath and her friends were all smiles after making handmade mugs, plates, and bowls.
As mentioned in Kath’s caption, siblings Ria and Xavi Atayde were the ones who invited them to try pottery out! They took a class in Wabi Sabi, a local pottery studio located in San Juan. According to Kath, “wabiwabi-sabi aesthetic means ‘appreciating beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature.’” What a beautiful way to look at things, right?
If you’re also interested in taking up pottery, you can book a beginners class in the same studio for Php 4,400! The session lasts for three hours and is inclusive of 1.5 kgs of clay and all the tools needed. According to Wabi Sabi’s site, this crash course will teach you how to knead, throw, and sculpt your own ceramics. They will be the ones to paint and glaze your works but you can freely collaborate with them on the look and feel. After the class, your works will be fired up in their in-house kiln and can be collected after two to three weeks.
Imagine drinking coffee from a mug that you made with your own hands! You can secure a slot in wabi sabi through AirBNB experience. Take note: They are only accepting a maximum of four students per class due to COVID-19 restrictions.
But if you’re on a budget or aren’t ready to take a class yet, you can absolutely try pottery at home! ICYDK, you don’t always need a pottery wheel to create ceramics—it’s also possible to make them by hand. All you need are air-dry clay, paint, and acrylic gloss. These materials are quite affordable and available locally—they’re easily searchable in Shopee or Lazada.
There are also lots of tutorials available on Youtube! Like this one for example:
They’re so cute but also so easy to do!
