The UP College Admission Test is one of the most challenging college entrance examinations but also the most awaited in the country. However, in 2020 UP started selecting students based on an admission score model. According to UP Office of Admissions director Francisco de los Reyes, the model was studied by a multidisciplinary committee with a core of 40 data scientists. Factoring in the health risk of holding the in-person test during the COVID-19 pandemic, the admittance of applicants was based only on their high school grades.
After its suspension for three consecutive years, the University of the Philippines’ Office of Admissions finally announced the return of UPCAT this 2024.
The UPCAT 2024 application period officially begins on the first week of March 2023. Since all applications will be processed online, applicants need to encode their grades from eighth to 11th Grade in the UPCAT online portal. Those still in 11th Grade when the application starts, can encode their grades online in September 2023 when they are finally available.
By September, the university will also request hard copies of the applicants’ official grades from their respective institutions for the Office of Admissions to verify.
UPCAT 2024 passers will be admitted to the University of the Philippines in the first semester of the Academic Year 2024-2025.
In 2022, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano filed Senate Resolution No. 157, which strongly suggests that the University of the Philippines bring back UPCAT for the Academic Year 2023-2024. He said the reason for the resolution is “to prevent killing students’ dreams” because it doesn’t level the field for students whose high schools don’t give adequately higher grades.
