What started as a band of 110 students informally getting together to review for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) board exams in 1947 led to the opening of what would be known today as the University of the East, or UE. To learn more about this university, here’s a quick primer:

History of the University of the East

As mentioned, it all began when Dr. Francisco T. Dalupan, Sr. and some colleagues staged review classes for the CPA exam. Once that effort proved successful, the group went on to establish the Philippine College of Commerce and Business Administration (PCCBA) in Sampaloc, Manila. The opening was met with the enrollment of 350 students. The school was moved a year later to the main campus on Claro M. Recto Avenue. It officially became a university and was renamed to the University of the East in 1951. It saw the addition of the Colleges of Law, Medicine, and Engineering, as well as the Graduate School of Education and Business Administration in the coming years. In about 14 years after it was informally founded with 110 students, it grew its student body to 60,000 by 1960.
