History of University of Southern Mindanao

Formerly known as the Mindanao Institute of Technology (MIT), the USM was founded by the late Bai Hadjma Fatima Matabay Plang on October 1, 1954. This premier land grant university in the Southern Philippines is considered as one of the state-owned universities and colleges (SUCs) that have garnered the Level IV status. The USM is expected to carry out four-fold functions: (1) Instruction, (2) Research, (3) Extension), and (4) Resource Generation. At present, the university has produced notable graduates who embody distinguishable values such as leadership, industry, and the dedication to work.

Plang is a highly esteemed Maguindanao princess who headed the MIT before the USM main campus was owned by several leaders from Japanese occupation  to the United States government. Once former President Elipidio Quirino signed the law to create the MIT, Bai Matabay Plang felt compelled to establish a state college in Southern Mindanao. Eventually, the USM received funding to establish and continue its operations. On March 13, 1978, former President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed the Presidential Decree No. 1312, converting MIT into a university with Dr. Jaman S. Imlan as its first university President.
