Students living in the northern parts of Luzon may find it difficult to travel to and from Metro Manila to pursue their studies. But there are a lot of great colleges and universities outside Metro Manila that can still offer the same quality of education. For example, the University of Baguio is a top choice in the “City of Pines,” especially for those who want to study Hotel and Restaurant Management and in the Medical SciIences. 

Before applying to the University of Baguio, here are some things you need to know about the institution:

History of the University of Baguio

Formerly known as the Baguio Technical and Commercial College, the University of Baguio is a private university that offers both basic and higher education. The university was established back in 1948 by founders Fernando Bautista and Rosa Castillo Bautista along General Luna Road, Baguio City. With around 80 students during its founding, it first offered basic education for two years and started having tertiary programs in 1950.

Fast forward to a few years later, Baguio Technical and Commercial College received university status in 1969, hence it was renamed to University of Baguio. Additionally, back  when the university’s 65th anniversary was celebrated in 2013, the University of Baguio became the first higher education institution that offered Forensic Science in the country. Similarly, the University of Baguio also offered Northern Luzon’s first-ever Music program during that time. In 2016, it was given autonomous status by the Commission on Higher Education. 

Top Courses the University of Baguio is Known For

With its student population of over 18,000 students since 2018, the university has 10 departments with several courses for students to apply to. These include  Business Administration and Accountancy, Criminal Justice, Dentistry, Engineering and Architecture, Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, Law, Nursing, Natural Sciences, International Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Teacher Education. Do take note that the university’s Bachelor of Science in Criminology program is certified as a Center of Excellence while its Bachelor of Secondary Education program isdeemed a  a Center for Development. Moreover, its graduates often perform well in the board exams for Nursing, Dentistry, and Medical Technology according to the Professional Regulations Commission Board

How to Apply to the University of Baguio

Thinking of applying to the University of Baguio? You can easily do so without having to take an entrance examination. All you have to do is prepare the documents needed for admissions and pay a reservation fee to submit your online application and immediately reserve a slot. Here’s a brief guide to your application as an incoming freshman: 

  1. Prepare the following documents:
  • Scanned copy of first semester report card (F138) for Grade 12 students 
  • Original and scanned Grade 12 report card duly signed by school principal for students who graduated prior to AY 2022-2023
  • Photocopy of PSA Birth Certificate
  • Declaration and Waiver Form 
  • Data Privacy Consent Form
  1. Register via the Online Registration Facility.
  2. Fill out the application details required and submit. 
  3. Pay the reservation fee of P1000 to any accredited University of Baguio banks and payment centers. 
  4. Scan a copy of the payment receipt. 
  5. Fill out the New Student Online Credentials Submission Form.
  6. Upload the documents you’ve prepared and the payment receipt and submit.
  7. Lastly, wait for the Admissions and Record Center to evaluate your application and approve your application and registration.

How Much Tuition and Other Fees Cost at the University of Baguio

If you decide to enroll at the University of Baguio for your college years, be sure to prepare around P22,000 to P50,000 for its tuition fees per semester.The exact fee depends on the degree program you’re applying to and units you’ll be taking. Do note that the University of Baguio does offer scholarships, from academic scholarships and CHED-offered scholarships to performing arts and athletic scholarships to student assistants/marshalls scholarships.

Famous Alumni from the University of Baguio

The University of Baguio has produced some notable alumni over the years, especially in the field of athletics.  These include 2020 Olympics medalists Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial, who have all won medals for boxing. Actress Neri Naig is also another alumni noted for her roles in All You Need is Pag-ibig and The Legal Wife.
