Top 7 Universities in the Philippines Based on World Rankings

Deciding which college to go to can be a pretty tough choice to make when you aren’t very aware of your options. Whether you’re dead set on going to a university majority of your family members graduated from or one that most of your friends are aiming to attend, a little research on our university landscape will definitely help both widen or maybe even narrow down your options!

ICYDK, the Philippines reportedly has one of the best higher education systems in all of Asia, ranking 46th overall in the 2016 QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings. There are about 2,300 higher education institutions across the nation, and in spite of the pandemic, a select few of them still claim spots in and are recognized by various trusted global university rankings.

Among these are the Times Higher Education World University Rankings as well as the QS World University Rankings, both of which assess universities under different metrics such as overall performance, international transfer, academic reputation, and the like! Here are the Top 7 Universities in the Philippines, according to world rankings:

University of the Philippines

There are only three universities in the Philippines that made it to the overall Times Higher Education World University Rankings, among which the University of the Philippines (UP) is ranked the highest at 601-800. In addition, the University of the Philippines was also ranked 396th overall and 69th in all of Asia in the QS World University Rankings 2021

The University of the Philippines is the country’s national university. It has seven constituent universities and 15 campuses across the nation. And according to Top Universities, “[UP] currently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world for English language and literature and in the top 250 faculties around the world for social sciences and management.” 

Ateneo de Manila University

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) is a private research university located in Metro Manila. ADMU ranks 601-650 overall in the QS World Rankings and is 135th in Asia in 2021. In addition, Ateneo is also the only Philippine university in the top 200 of the 2022 QS World University Graduate Employability Rankings. This means that Ateneo de Manila University is the best when it comes to preparing students for employment after graduation

De La Salle University

De La Salle University (DLSU) is among the few Philippine universities included in the University Impact Ranking 2020 by Times Higher Education, which recognizes universities who have created big social and economic impact. QS placed DLSU in the overall world rank of 801-1000 and the 166th rank for Asia in 2021. 

De La Salle University is a private Catholic research university, which earned the highest research performance rank in 2019. Along with UP and ADMU, DLSU also ranks among the Top 200 universities in the world for English language and literature.

University of Santo Tomas

As the oldest university in the Philippines, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) has held its position as a top Philippine university for a long time. UST was ranked 801-1000 in the QS World University Rankings and is 186th in Asia. 

The University of Santo Tomas was ranked in the 251-300 bracket out of 550 universities in the 2022 QS World University Graduate Employability Rankings. This makes UST the Top 2 Philippine university (next to Ateneo) that equips its students “with the ‘soft skills’ required in the modern workplace” and thus produces graduates that are highly likely to be employed.

University of San Carlos

Located in Cebu City, the University of San Carlos (USC) is known to be the top university outside of Metro Manila. USC has been included in the QS World University Rankings in Asia for the past two years and was ranked in the 451-500 bracket in 2021. USC is also known to have one of the top passing rates for the CPA board exam, Chemical Engineering licensure exam, Architect board exam, and more. 

Mapua University

Mapua University is known to be the biggest engineering university in the Philippines. Mapua ranked in the 501-550 bracket in the QS World University Rankings in Asia 2021 and was among the only seven universities who received a ranking in the year 2020.

Silliman University

Located in Dumaguete City, Siliman University is known to produce a lot of topnotchers in the board exams! As one of the top universities outside of Metro Manila, Siliman University ranked in the 501-550 bracket in the QS World University Rankings in Asia 2021. Like Mapua, it was also among the only seven universities who received a ranking in the year 2020.
