Many college students in the Philippines have a good grasp of the English language, especially since plenty of subjects taken up in school are normally taught in English. If you're up for using your English proficiency to your advantage (and brushing up on your people skills while you're at it), taking on a side gig as an English tutor is one way to earn extra cash at home.
An online English school based in Japan called RareJob is one website that accepts students as English tutors. You don't need any teaching experience to apply, just as long as you are 18 years old or above. Interested? Read on to learn more:
How do I apply?
English tutor applicants on RareJob need to: be at least 18 years old, have a basic grasp of technology and computers (video conferencing apps and emails, for instance), be highly proficient in English, and have their own TIN.
To apply, you first have to register on their website and create an account. Once your application has been cleared, you will be asked to take the English Proficiency Test, which consists of four parts: Conversation, Vocabulary, Grammar, and Comprehension. After taking the test, you will need to show up (virtually, at least!) to your interview, where they will further test your English speaking skills. You won't need to show up physically and leave your house throughout the application process and even during the teaching sessions, everything is done online.
Once you are accepted, you will partake in the Onboarding Program to prepare yourself as an English tutor, and then you'll be allowed to take on lessons after that.
How much do I earn?
Computing your Tutor Fee will depend on how many lessons you book in a month and how much the rate is per lesson. There are also certain incentives a tutor may qualify for, which will be added on top of your total Tutor Fee. While RareJob does not state the average earnings of a tutor per month, you can look up previous RareJob tutors on YouTube to learn from their experiences. One YouTuber named Josh Cunanan shared that the most they earned on the platform amounted to P36,000 in just one month. It all depends on how many lessons you can book and accomplish in a month, but the more work you are able to put in, the higher your income will get.
