If you're looking for something to do this weekend, you don't need to go far, since the provinces near Metro Manila hold special wonders that may just surprise you. One such underrated destination is the province of Rizal. This gem at the south of Metro Manila practically has everything for everyone, be it historical, cultural, and natural wonders. And if you're leaning towards the latter, you should definitely not miss the trekking adventure to Tinipak River in the town of Tanay.

A hub for adventurers

Barangay Daraitan in Tanay is visited by thrill-seeking backpackers who aim to conquer Mt. Daraitan. But if you're not physically and emotionally ready to climb a mountain yet, you can opt instead to go on a trek to Tinipak River. The rough trail you will trek on should be challenging enough for both new and seasoned trekkers.

There are a few local travel agencies that offer packaged tours to Daraitan that already include round trip transportation and guide fees. But if you prefer to venture there by yourself, creating a D-I-Y itinerary is easy.

Getting there

There are vans bound for Tanay at EDSA Star Mall in Mandaluyong. Fare is roughly P70. Get off at Tanay Market and hire a tricycle to take you to Barangay Daraitan. The fare costs about P500, which six passengers can share (if you bring more friends, then you'd be able to cut back more on transportation fees).

Once you arrive in Daraitan after a bumpy tricycle ride, there is a river that you must cross. You have two options: you can use the hanging bridge or ride a raft to get across, which only costs P5 per person. Either way, there are tricycles waiting for you at the other side of the river, which will serve as your ride towards the barangay hall of Daraitan. Once there, you will need to register and pay the environmental fee. You can also hire a guide for your trek and rent headlamps.

While you're dreaming of jetting off towards exotic destinations, do not forget that there are also surprising adventures that are not too far away, just like the Tinipak River and Daraitan. You just have to know where to look.
