If you're currently taking up Communication or you've graduated with a bachelor's degree in it, I'm almost certain that you've heard a few ~interesting~ things people have to say about your course. I myself graduated with the same course a few years back, and I've definitely had my fair share of misconceptions from different people about my field of study.Â
From thinking you chose it because it's "masskomportable" to immediately jumping to the conclusion that we're all extroverts, there are a ton of things people get wrong about our course. Aside from those, there are also a couple of things that only maskom students can relate to. Keep on scrolling to learn more and feel *seen*:
1. People think that it's "MassKomportable" in your course.
Just because it's not a math- or science-related course doesn't mean that it's not hard. From understanding multiple communication theories and learning about the nitty-gritty of film, TV, and radio production to immersing yourself in public relations, advertising, and copywriting, there's no denying that Communication is a technically demanding course!
2. You've been called a "jack of all trades, master of none" at least once.
While it's true that this course immerses you in all aspects of the industry (making us a "jack of all trades"), it also means having more job opportunities for you after graduating. You can work as a scriptwriter, researcher, host, social media manager, and copywriter, among many other things!
3. No, not all of us are extroverts.
Because we're constantly working on productions, people jump to the conclusion that all Communication students are extroverts. While that may be true for some, a good chunk of us all like working behind the scenes, a.k.a during pre- and post-production. However, when there's a chance for us to be in front of the camera, you would hardly know we were ~shy~ to begin with!
4. The "not responding" pop-up is your worst enemy.
In this course, you are constantly using programs like Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Celtx for photo and video editing and scriptwriting. You could be super hard at work, but once that not-responding pop-up shows up, you just pray and hope you hit save. P.S. Here's your reminder to always, always Ctrl + S!
5. It's common to see multiple saved files of your video or script drafts, all with varying "FINAL" or "FINAL LAST NA TALAGA" file names.
Rome wasn't built in a day, and so is your script. Just make sure to rename it accordingly before emailing it to your professor, LOL!
6. When it comes to group projects in your general education subjects, you're immediately given the script writer or video editor role.
In projects for your general education subjects, you're usually grouped with people from different courses. Once they find out you're a Comm student, they immediately trust you with the role of scriptwriter or video editor. It's honestly kind of touching at this point!
7. You unconsciously turn into a ~critic~ every time you consume any piece of media.
You just can't help it! Shoutout to all your professors who made you write countless analysis papers for helping you develop this ~skill~.
8. You've definitely convinced your friends to star in your short films or video projects.
Hiring other people is hard, okay? What isn't hard is asking your friends (read: pleading them) to star in your short film—after you've promised to libre them in their favorite resto, of course.
