We first got wind of this ridiculously relatable Instagram account on BuzzFeed and knew that we had to get in touch with writer-slash-artist Mari Andrew to know more about what's the inspiration behind all her posts on @bymariandrew. Check out our quick chat with her below!
Introductions first. "I'm Mari Andrew, age 29, and I'm a writer... turning into an illustrator!"
Are all your adorbs illustrations done by hand? "I do all my illustrations totally by hand, and I do them with Sharpie pens and watercolors on watercolor paper."
What inspires you to create these Insta-illustrations? "Everything I draw is something that has happened to me. I illustrate as a way to process my experiences and thoughts, and I try to take big moments or thoughts from my life and turn them into a simple drawing. They're specific to me, but I think people can often relate to the themes—heartbreak, insecurity, ambition, vulnerability, and just trying to do my best!"
Any favorites? "A favorite recent one is:Â
"I draw a lot about the struggles of dating, but this one is more optimistic! I am happily single, but I love the idea of being with someone who adds a lot of color and fun and excitement in my life. That's ideal love for me."Â
Who do you follow for Insta-inspo? "Oh I really love @lianafinck, @janiekorn, @arizorus and @lord_birthday. Many others, but those are recent favorites! They're so honest and funny and also really supportive of other artists."
