It’s been over a year (and counting...) of staying home, and I don’t know about you but I’m developing a serious itch for adventure. Since we can't go out at the moment, we can take this time to thoroughly think about our plans for the future, whether it be for future travel goals or academic goals, or both!
Flying to South Korea for vacation is one thing, but getting to experience life as a university student in Seoul for a whole summer is a whole dream come true. And these three top-ranked South Korean universities make it totally possible! Every year, Yonsei University, Korea University, and Hanyang University host month-long summer programs specifically catered to undergraduate students from all over the world.
In these programs, you get to experience dorm life, learn Korean, mingle with both international and local students, and choose classes to enroll in from a wide range of courses (some of which could even be credited to your college degree!), all while immersing yourself in the beauty and culture of South Korea.
These summer programs are normally done face-to-face, but in order to ensure the safety of their students, the universities have currently adopted a hybrid schedule instead, with some activities being held offline and others online. But who knows? Things may get better by next summer. *fingers crossed* These programs usually run from around mid-June to early August, which means we have plenty of time to plan and save up!
Whether you’re a K-Culture fanatic or you just want to scratch that travel itch and experience new things, here are three summer programs in Seoul you really wouldn’t want to miss out on:
1. Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) — Yonsei University
Possibly the most famous international summer program of the three, Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) is held in South Korea’s top private university, Yonsei University. Sounds and looks familiar? Well, that’s because many K-dramas such as True Beauty (Yes, Cha Eunwoo was here!), Extraordinary You, and many more were filmed in their incredibly beautiful campus.
The YISS program is open to all enrolled college students, as well as high school seniors already accepted to a university. The program offers college credit courses that run for either four or six weeks, which BTW will all be taught in English!
The tuition fee for one course at YISS is priced at KRW 1,000,000 (around P43,400), with an additional application fee of KRW 100,000. It’s a little painful on the wallet—we know! But don’t worry, scholarships and early enrollment benefits are available for students who are in need of a little bit of financial help. This year they offered a 40 percent early bird discount for early applications to the 2021 YISS program, so make sure to look out for discounts such as this when the registration period rolls around next February!
For more information on YISS, you can visit their official website or check out their Instagram account (@yonseistudyabroad). If you’re interested in knowing what YISS was like this year, we recommend you check out @kayygee_ or @matchalaura on TikTok.
2. Korea International Summer School (ISC) — Korea University
Korea University is known to be one of the oldest, largest, and top-ranked universities in South Korea. And if you’re looking to spend your summer studying in a campus that looks like a whole castle, then the Korea International Summer School program is just for you!
Like YISS, this summer program is open to all college students and incoming freshmen who are interested in studying in South Korea. Students can take up to a maximum of three courses of their choice under different fields of study such as Business and Economics, Science & Engineering, Humanities, and Korean Language, among others. The tuition for the ISC program is also priced the same as that of YISS.
If you’d like to know more about ISC, you can visit their website. You can also check out Indonesian student Avira Nisha’s TikTok account (@aviranisha) where she posts all about her experience as an ISC 2021 participant.
3. Hanyang International Summer School (HISS) — Hanyang University
Located in Seoul, Hanyang University is known to be the first and best engineering school in Korea. (And ICYDK, this is also where Seventeen’s S.Coups and Jeonghan are currently enrolled as practical music students! Okay, SKL.) But this top-rated university is also known for being incredibly welcoming to international students!
Every year, around 2,000 international students participate in the Hanyang International Summer School (HISS) program, where they take four weeks of intensive Korean classes along with their college credit course of choice and also get to participate in three complimentary cultural activities to learn more about Korean culture.
Under normal circumstances, Hanyang would also adopt a buddy system between international and local students in order to encourage the students to immerse in each other’s cultures. (Cute!) Including the application fee, the regular HISS program tuition fee is priced at KRW 2,100,000 (approximately P92,200).
