Stanford University is pleased to announce that interested students can now enroll in a ten-week course about one of today's most critically acclaimed songs—the ten-minute version of "All Too Well" by the award-winning artist Taylor Swift! Miss Americana's hit song is so good that an in-depth investigation of its lyrics will be offered under the module of Stanford's Introductory Studies.
This is part of their Italic 99 Programme that will begin in the Winter Quarter of 2023 with a goal to "offer students an introduction to topics taught by alumni of the program. With each quarter offering unique courses, these student-led classes are focused on hands-on learning and have included topics such as travel sketching, watercolor, music composition, improv acting, animation, and digital art, among many others."Â
"There's the cultural context, there's the music itself, there's the music theory, there's the vocal line. There's so much that goes into a song that I think people aren't really grasping how much you can actually talk about,"Â Nona Hungate, the instructor handling the course, stated in an interview.Â
This is not actually the first time that Taylor’s music became a university course. New York University's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music initiated its class on the singer in February 2022, taught by Rolling Stone writer Brittany Spanos. In August 2022, it was followed by the University of Texas's liberal arts course titled "Literary Contests and Contexts: The Taylor Swift Songbook'' which examined her songs alongside famous western poets.
"All Too Well" was initially released in 2012 as the fifth track on her Red album. Although it was not chosen as a single from the album at the time, fans have always been vocal that the song deserves more recognition because of its impressive lyrics and the touching delivery of the singer.Â
Fast forward to 2021, Taylor proudly informed her supporters that she shares the same sentiments about the song. She did not hold back anymore and decided to give to the world its ten-minute version for the re-release of her fourth studio album. It is no secret that the track was originally longer, so revealing the rest of the lyrics is such a wonderful gift to everyone, especially for her fans who waited for so long.Â
Let us also not forget the fact that this iconic heartbreak anthem won a Grammy! The famous singer-songwriter and now a rising director received the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Music Video when she released a 15-minute short film of this poignant track. With the thought-provoking acting of Dylan O’Brien and Sadie Sink, the directorial debut of the global star was a huge success. Taylor is the first artist to win the category with sole directing credit for their own music video (and she deserves it!). You may relive the "All Too Well" music video below:
