In case you didn't know, sitting down all day isn't good for you. Yup, while your mind is working up a storm digitally, your body's basically suffering from being idle. Simply put, humans simply weren't made to sit down and be stagnant all day.
Some of us really have no choice—working from home and all. But, there are a bunch of workarounds. Standing office desks are an alternative, or you could also exercise a bunch to make up for lost... standing active time?
Researchers have found that a full day of sitting can be fixed by exercising for 30 to 40 minutes per day. Let that sink in for a second. Sitting down has that much effect in our health. Whoa. Back to exercise, the 30 to 40 minutes should be spent doing "moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity."
According to the scientists, any amount of exercise is better than nothing. Even standing up once in a while will help you out to some extent.
"In active individuals doing about 30-40 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity, the association between high sedentary time and risk of death is not significantly different from those with low amounts of sedentary time," the researchers wrote.
Excuse us while we sneak in some physical activity before we end the day. We'll also be dreaming of a treadmill desk because who doesn't love to hit two birds with one stone, right?
