History of Silliman University
Retired businessman Dr. Horace B. Silliman had a vision for the Philippines and its educational system. With a budget of $10,000, he desired to found an industrial school and have couple Dr. David Sutherland Hibbrar and his wife Laura head it. On the tip that he should visit Dumaguete, Dr. Silliman became attracted to the island. In 1901, Silliman University was founded as an all-boys elementary school that attracted students from other Asian countries and in 1912, accepted its first female student.Â
The school gained university status in 1938, but trials were yet to come with the disruption of World War II and the declaration of Martial Law. After the university had surpassed these trials, and is now on its 120th year and has attained a reputation for being one of the most prestigious schools in the Philippines. It educates over 2,000 students with a holistic teaching that prepares them to use their education to serve others.
Top Courses Silliman University Is Known For
The medium-sized university has an acceptance rate of around 60 to 70 percent and offers more than 140 certificate, undergraduate, and post-graduate programs, and basic education from early childhood to senior high school. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has named Silliman a Center of Excellence in the fields of Nursing Education, Teacher Education, Accountancy, Anthropology, Biology, and Information Technology Education. Locally, Silliman has ranked 4th in the Philippines when it comes to the passing rates in Board examinations and has historically also scored high licensure exam-related reports in Nursing Education, Accountancy, and Mechanical Engineering.
Courses also unique to the institution are its degrees in Marine Biology and Environmental Science, which students go to for Dumaguete’s prime location. Silliman’s Coastal Resource Management master’s program also played a crucial part in helping Apo Island earn its title as one of the world’s best diving spots because of the management of its marine reserves.Â
How to Apply to Silliman University
If you’re looking to start college at Silliman as a freshman student, you’ll be pleased to learn of its open admission policy, where applicants are assessed according to their academic performance, high school, interview results, and scores in qualifying exams (for nursing, med tech, and physical therapy applicants only). The applicants are asked to go through the process below:
- Submit required documents in soft and hard copy in the university’s online enrollment system. The requirements are:
- Results of the qualifying exam (for nursing, med tech, and physical therapy applicants only)
- Two statements of good moral character
- One recent passport size of 2” x 2” picture
- A copy of your birth certificate issued by the NSO or PSA
- Physical examination certificationÂ
- A university waiver available here
- Pay a downpayment of P5,000 online or over-the-counter.
- Complete the registration process online.

Famous Alumni from Silliman University
Silliman has seen many of its graduates go on to become some of the country’s foremost thinkers and change makers. Among its many notable alumni are President Carlos P. Garcia, who took a pre-law program in 1916, marine scientist and DENR secretary Angel Alcala, and incumbent Department of Education secretary Leonor Briones. Among a couple of other recognizable names are National Artist for Cinema Eddie Romero, the first Filipino provincial superior of the Society of Jesus Horacio de la Costa, who authored many books on Philippine and Asian culture and history, as well as Emilio Javier, who founded the Silliman University College of Law.Â
