Preparing for college applications? One of the schools you might be considering is the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. If you're interested in becoming a future Iskolar ng Bayan, here are a few things to note about the university as well as its application process.
History of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, or PUP, was first established as a public government institution known as the Manila Business School and was commissioned as part of what’s now known as the Higher Education Modernization Act. The institution itself, which marked its start at 1904, was renamed multiple times and finally settled on its current name in 1978, when it received its university status.
Over a century later, PUP education can be accessed through its 22 branches around Central Luzon, South Luzon, and Metro Manila, according to Edukasyon.ph. In the last 20 years, the university added many offerings, including the College of Law, the College of Communication, and the College of Architecture and Fine Arts, and courses such as Public Administration and Governance, among others.Â

PUP has time and time again been recognized for producing sought-after graduates who possess a stellar work ethic that employers are after. In a 2018 survey conducted by JobStreet, companies identified PUP graduates as a top choice in the hiring process.Â
The institution has made a name for itself in the fields of business, information technology, science and engineering, education, and government and public service. Many come there for its programs in Journalism and Filipinology, of which it received a Center of Development award from the Commission on Higher Education. Of course, it is also renowned for its entrepreneurship courses, which helped it get its start, and its bachelor’s degree on Information Technology.
