History of the Philippine Women's University
The Philippine Women's University in Malate, Manila was first known as the Philippine Women's College during its establishment in 1919. Its founders were a group of Filipino women consisting of Clara Aragon, Concepcion Aragon, Francisca Tirona Benitez, Paz Marquez Benitez, Carolina Ocampo Palma, Mercedes Rivera and Socorro Marquez Zaballero with the assistance of Filipino lawyer José Abad Santos. It first opened as an exclusive college to women with an initial enrollment of 190 students. This is because of the institution's main goal to prepare women for "life service and leadership" during a time wherein women's rights and suffrage were just beginning to attain national consciousness in the country.
As the years passed, the university's programs grew alongside its population, eventually accepting male students to the institution in the 1970s. Additionally, the university opened other campuses across the country such as in Ilo-ilo and Davao. They also created a Career Development and Continuing Education Center (CDCEC) as a way to bring the university's education to other areas in the country. There are currently several CDCEC franchises in Calamba, Sta. Cruz, Baguio, Camarines Norte, Tarlac and Bulacan owned and operated by private individuals and groups.
