Known for being the first-ever tertiary institution to hold an official name in Filipino, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila or PLM identify their students as their greatest pride—backed by their dedication to provide quality education that meets compassion. Before applying, here are some things you need to know about the university:

History of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila

On June 19, 1965, the public university was founded by the Philippine Congress through Republic Act No. 4196 or “An Act Authorizing the City of Manila to Establish and Operate the University of City of Manila.” As a matter of fact, it is the only chartered and autonomous university funded by the government. Its noble name came from the Filipino term “pantas,” which refers to a wise person.

The campus is situated in the historic walls of Intramuros, which also used to be the same site for other prestigious universities such as the Universidad de San Ignacio (1590-1798) and Ateneo de Municipal de Manila (1865-1901). PLM has stood the test of time and continues to give the best education possible to brilliant minds from all walks of life.

PLM is well-known for its steady 100% board passing rate and long list of topnotchers. This illustrates the university's unwavering support to guiding their students to greatness. The PLM College of Medicine, on the other hand, has the highest passing rate at 98.06% on the 2021 Physician Licensure Exam (PLE). The icing on the cake is PLM alumnus Vienne D. Pinlac, M.D. ranked fifth in the said exam, making all PLMayers proud!

How to Apply to the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila 

If you want to be a PLMayer, you must first apply for the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Admission Test (PLMAT) where applicants will be evaluated based on the PLM Admission Ranking. This is not limited to bona fide Manila residents because it is also open to students from other cities. The following are the requirements:

  1.   Birth certificate issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
  2.   Form 138 (Grade 11) certified true copy with general weighted average (GWA). If necessary, include a GWA Certification.
  3.   Certificate of Completion for Alternative Learning System (ALS) completers and Accreditation & Equivalency (A&E) passers.
  4.   Voter’s Certification of Parent and Proof of Residency for at least five years are required for Manila residents only.

Remember that there is no application fee for the PLMAT, and you may easily apply online. Simply go to the PLMAT website to fill out the application form and submit the requirements right away.

How Much Tuition and Other Fees Cost at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila

Since PLM believes that every student deserves a chance for quality education to secure a bright future, its undergraduate programs are free of charge. The Philippine government and the City of Manila pay for their tuition in accordance with Republic Act 10931 or the "Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act." The youth, especially those living in Manila, can take advantage of the university's reputation for developing competent individuals no matter what their standing in life is.
