Founded in 1900 as the first co-educational and non-sectarian learning institution, the National University (NU) is more than just another college along Sampaloc, Manila. The college was founded on the values of patriotism, and as its name suggests, a legacy of nationalism. Here’s what you need to know before becoming a Nationalian and sporting the blue and gold.
History of the National University
In August 1900, a 23-year-old educator named Don Mariano Jhocson founded Colegio Filipino, the country’s pioneer non-sectarian and co-educational school back then. It had only a few students and its own founder served as its teacher and director. Five years later, the institution offered various business courses, such as accounting and bookkeeping and the school was renamed to Colegio Mercantil.
In 1916, the school would see another rename to National Academy. It was finally renamed to National University the same day senator and educator Camilo Osias was positioned as its president. Afterward, it went on to open the Colleges of Education, Commerce, and later, Pharmacy and Dentistry. The 1940s saw the school open facilities in STEM as well as expand into Architecture and the Arts.Â
In more recent history, the SM Group of Companies acquired the majority of the university in 2008, which led to the upgrading of its facilities and campuses. Today, the NU system also offers basic education through its merged institution with what was once the Nazareth School. The main campus remains in Sampaloc, Manila and offers 24 undergraduate courses in eight colleges.

The National U has established its place as offering premier tertiary education in the fields of Architecture, Accountancy, Education, and Computer Science. It has also been a top choice for Electronic and Civil Engineering.
Apart from its academic courses, NU has been known to dominate when it comes to sports such as collegiate basketball, volleyball, and the UAAP Cheerdance Competition.Â
How to Apply to NU
Prospective freshmen undergrads who wish to study at NU may apply online. First, they’ll need to gather the following requirements to get their application started:
- Grade 12 Report Card
- Certificate of Good Moral Character
- Photocopy of NSO Birth Certificate
- Certificate of Passing or Rating if they took the Philippine Educational Placement Test and Alternative Learning System Accreditation
- Photocopy of Diploma
- ID photos
Next up, potential Nationalians should follow the steps below to complete their application:
- Proceed to the onlineapp.national-u.edu.ph/quest and click on the Online Application button
- Download and fill out the Application Permit with Academic Documents Waiver Form
- Check out the page 2021 Procedure for Enrollment of New Freshmen Students
- When prompted, submit digital copies of the documents listed above and expect an email from the Admissions Office within 2-3 working days regarding your application.
- If accepted, wait for another email from the Registrar’s Office regarding instructions on how to make your tuition payments, an assessment form, and payment validation
- Make the necessary payments through the online portal
How Much Tuition and Other Fees Cost at NU
When applying to National U, you must set aside P3,000 for a non-refundable reservation fee. Per semester, college students would need to shell out around P30,000 to P60,000. There are also a handful of scholarships applicants may try for: the Gold Scholarship (95 GWA or above in senior high school and no grade lower than 90 in any subject); the Blue Scholarship (85 GWA or above in senior high school and no grade lower than 80 in any subject); the Nationalian Scholarship Program; and the Mariano Jhocson Science Scholarship Program for students from science high schools who display exceptional grades and come from a family whose income does not exceed P360,000 annually.
Famous Alumni From NU
National U has produced its fair share of remarkable leaders and a good number of top athletes. From the latter, President Fidel V. Ramos took Civil Engineering at NU and managed to score eighth in the Civil Engineering Board Exam, while former President Carlos P. Garcia took up law at NU and ranked in the top 10 of the 1923 bar exam. Another game-changing lawmaker was Elisa Ochoa, an NU arts degree holder who became the first woman elected in the congress.Â
Notable NU alumni in the art world include Nestor Vicente Madali Gonzalez, a novelist and poet who was named a National Artist for Literature (he never made it to graduation), and Roque Federizon Lee, also known as ROXLEE, a Filipino animator and cartoonist. In sports, basketball players Danny Ildefonso and Carlos Loyzaga, volleyball player Myla Pablo, and Taekwondo athlete Kurt Barbosa are proud NU graduates.
