All incoming college freshies undergo the process of picking a degree program, and it isn't always easy. There are many checkboxes to tick before arriving at a decision, like one's passion, skills, dream job, and more. But it's notably harder for students with niche interests to find the perfect course. That said, we've made a list of interesting yet uncommon courses available in the Philippines for those who aren't afraid to go the unconventional route.

1. Bachelor of Science in Cosmetic Science

Makeup and skincare junkies, rejoice! You can take up a course exclusively available at Centro Escolar University dedicated to formulating makeup products, fragrances, and toiletries. This program also equips the students with entrepreneurial skills that will come in handy if they decide to run their own cosmetic business someday!

2. Bachelor of Science in Music Business Management

Listen up, aspiring music executives—there's a course for you! Meridian International Business, Arts, and Technology or MINT College is the first and only learning institution to offer this program. It exposes student musicians to not just music performance, sound engineering, and sound production but also the music industry's business side.

3. Bachelor of Science in Clothing Technology

Unlike Fashion Design, this course isn't centered on the aesthetics or design aspect of creating clothes. Instead, it provides students with in-depth knowledge of the production and distribution of clothes and ways to revolutionize fashion. This program is available at the University of the Philippines -Diliman, but other universities like Central Luzon State University also offer similar programs.

4. Bachelor of Arts in Animation

Have you always dreamed of working in an animation studio and bringing drawings to life? If you instantly answered yes, try to pursue this program and gain skills in animation and storyboarding production. Many learning institutions, like De La Salle College of Saint Benilde or DLS-CSB and Ateneo de Naga University, began to offer animation programs in recent years to foster creatives.

5. Bachelor of Forensic Science

We are calling the attention of true crime and murder mystery enthusiasts! You can actually apply your interest in solving crimes IRL by taking this course. The University of Baguio offers it, which aims to train students to analyze evidence from crime scenes and come up with a just finding. Take this as your sign to study sign language interpretation professionally! DLS-CSB has a three-year program with a comprehensive Filipino Sign Language (FSL) curriculum. It develops the students into leader-advocates capable and committed to creating positive contributions, especially within the deaf communities.

7. Bachelor of Science in Esports

There’s no stopping esports from growing, as evidenced by the emergence of new-gen gamers and streamers recently. Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila, in partnership with Tier One Entertainment, actually offers an esports program with two tracks: Esports Management, which focuses on the gaming industry's business side and Game Design Development, dedicated to game design and programming.

8. Bachelor of Music in Musicology

If you want to follow a career path in music, go for a musicology program! It's perfect for those who still don't know which instrument they are going to specialize in, since it’s a holistic and comprehensive study of music. The University of Santo Tomas offers the program, and CEU offers a similar program as well.
