A great way to keep memories is through your Instagram stories. It's quick and easy to document your daily life and it allows you to do so in a very personalized matter. But aside from it being a bank of mementos, it's also a fun way to interact with your followers.

Here’s what you need to know about Instagram stories:

What are Instagram stories?

Instagram stories are the little circles you see at the top of your Instagram home page. This function allows you to share stories with your followers, as well as see content from those you personally follow. This feature was rolled out by Instagram in 2015 to counter Snapchat, a social media competitor, whose main functions are basically the same.

How do you make an Instagram story last more than 24 hours?

Two years after its launch, Instagram finally allowed users to keep their stories through the highlights function. This makes it possible for anyone to feature select stories on their feed, right below their details. To make a story a highlight, you just have to click the little heart on the lower right portion of your story.

But this isn’t the only way to do this. On your personal feed, tap on the little circle that says “New” and choose which stories you’d like to put in that specific highlight.

Now, moving on to a few tips and tricks to make your stories more engaging:

1. Add music to your stories

Instagram has rolled out a function for people in some areas to add background music to their stories. You can do so by clicking the musical note icon at the top of your screen. From there, you can search for your favorite artists or find the right song that fits your vibe!

2. Play with the colors of your Insta stories (especially the background!)

IG allows you to customize the colors of your stories through the doodle function. Here, you can try four different types of pens: the normal color pen, arrowhead, highlighter pen, and the glow pen--each can give you a different look and feel based on the aesthetic you want to add to your story. To change the color of each pen, you can choose from their three pre-selected color palettes or long-press on one color to open the custom color selection tool.

Pro tip: If you want to fill the entire field with a single color (aka change the background of your stories), just long-press on a single spot, and Instagram will do its thing!

3. Mix and match the fonts of your stories

Another way to personalize your story is through Insta’s array of fonts. Currently, you can choose among nine fonts--the range includes serifs, sans serifs, scripts, and even the font we all have a love-hate relationship with, Comic Sans.

To start using the text function on your stories, you can either simply tap the screen or tap the two-letter As on the upper right portion of your phone. Now you can type away and choose which fonts you'd like to use for your story! Here's what the fonts look like:

4. Add photos from your feed to your Instagram story

This is the easiest way to cross-promote your Instagram content. Since the Instagram algorithm is always changing, you can try posting your feed content on stories to make sure your followers see them. To do so, you have to tap the arrow button below your feed post and click “Add post to your story.”

5. Create collages on your Instagram stories

ICYDK, Instagram recently gave the option of adding multiple photos from your camera roll to your stories. Through this function, you can create cute collages without the hassle of using another app to create your stories. The only thing you’ll need is the gallery function, which allows you to use the photos from your camera roll as stickers.

6. Utilize Instagram’s interactive stickers

To further interact with your followers, make sure to use Instagram's fun sticker selection--make your followers choose between two options through the Poll sticker or test them on some trivia using the Quiz function. Another example is if you're a YouTuber with a vlog premiering soon, you can utilize the Countdown feature to increase the hype and make sure they're reminded when the video comes out. There are so many ways to keep your followers engaged so make sure to mix and match all the ways to do so!
