How do you become a nurse in the Philippines?

Republic Act 9173, or the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002, is the basis of the practice of nursing in the country.

It states that an aspiring nurse must complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and pass the Nurse Licensure examination to be considered a registered nurse. Before practicing, registered nurses are also required to take an oath of profession before the Board of Nursing or any government official authorized to administer oaths.

What subjects are part of the Nursing curriculum?

The curriculum focuses on outcome-based education and not competency-based standards.

In 2017, the Commission on Higher Education issued a memorandum that serves as a guideline on policies and standards for Nursing programs all over the country. The memorandum is the basis of all nursing curriculums in the country. It emphasizes that all nursing programs must shift from “competency-based standards” to “outcome-based education.”

With this, nursing programs usually offer a diverse range of subjects to fully equip their students with the necessary knowledge and skills needed in the profession. You won’t just be well-equipped in the technical side of things, but also the other aspects involved when you become a nurse.

These subjects include, but are not limited to:

  • Biochemistry
  • Logic and Critical Thinking
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
  • Theoretical Foundations in Nursing
  • Health Assessment
  • Nutrition and Diet Therapy
