Taft Avenue is surrounded by numerous restaurants and cafés, and these are frequently filled with both Senior High School (SHS) and college students from De La Salle University (DLSU). You may find them chattering away with their barkada or catching up on their schoolwork during their vacant periods. But with the university being overcrowded, it can be hard to find any free space on campus to be able to enjoy your time there. Fortunately, there are a variety of nearby spots near the campus that give you some downtime and a few quiet moments to yourself.

Here are some of the most hyped places around DLSU that you can go to when you want to take a break:

  1. Obscure Cafe

Found inside One Archers Place, this newly-opened coffee store offers pleasant customer service. The baristas will immediately whip up your order in a flash and present it to you with an enthusiastic persona. Moreover, their affordable food options are to die for, from hearty sandwiches to  delicious pasta dishes that are all guaranteed to  fill any student who needs to eat away their stress and exhaustion. With a minimalistic environment and chill music, this is a great place for you to catch up with your friends or to spend some time alone. Obscure Cafe is also open from 8:00 AM to 11:30 PM, so you are free to stay in late or come in early if you have nothing else to do.

  1. Coffee St. Manila

Located near the Agno Canteen, Coffee St. Manila opens as early as 6:30 AM on weekdays. An upside to this spot is that there is free WiFi, so you can scroll through your phone while sipping on an iced Spanish Latte. While their menu is limited, they do not hold back from providing high-quality meals and drinks. The innermost part of the cafe is designed like a garden wherein you and your friends can sit on bean bags or on the “grassy area.” Its lighting is also more dim so you can share intimate yet relaxing conversations with the people you’re with.

  1. Director’s Cafe

If you have nothing else to do and you’re feeling more spontaneous than ever, the Director’s Cafe is perfect for you! Located along Estrada Street, Malate, this place allows you to have a private screening of any movie of your choice. However, make sure to refer to their calendar since the cafe can be reserved for private sessions and events. Even if you don’t feel like watching anything, you can simply chill and try out their ultra-tasty meals and drinks.

  1. Big Boss

Big Boss can be found in EGI Taft Tower. It is a resto-cafe that has a simple interior design but some of their booths are built like a mini-treehouse , which are perfect for big and small groups alike. Furthermore, their food is affordable and high-quality even though they typically serve heaping amounts. Their must-tries include  Nachos Supreme, Smoked Barbeque Ribs, Special Beef Tapa (Korean), Beef Burger, and so much more. As for their drinking options, they provide milk tea options for boba addicts and a variety of coffee-based beverages for caffeine lovers.

  1. Asterisko Coffee

Just like Big Boss, Asterisko Coffee can be found in the same building. If you’re looking to splurge a little and treat yourself, then this is the place for you. This spot offers artisan coffee made by young and friendly baristas who concoct special, exclusive holiday drinks and hold workshops and performances by drag queens. If you are interested in participating in their workshop, the All About Kape Workshop aims to teach you the fundamentals of making coffee, specialty drinks, cupping, and espressos.

  1. Starbucks

You can never go wrong with Starbucks. Fortunately, there are two Starbucks branches near DLSU. You may opt to stay at the one near E. Razon but it is usually full by the afternoon. This particular branch has sockets for those who need to study and a terrace with outdoor seating for people who prefer to feel the breeze. If there are no more available seats at that branch, you can cross to the other side of Taft and enjoy your time at D’Student’s Place. While this branch is not as busy, the space is much more limited in comparison to the other one.

  1. Bo’s Coffee

Located at Green Residences, Bo’s Coffee is an underrated spot among Lasallians, which will ensure that there will always be a space for you to hang out and take a break. Moreover, this coffee spot has a second floor to cater to more students and customers.  All around, you will find sockets near their tables, readily available for anyone who needs to charge. While your devices are charging, you will also feel yourself re-charging thanks to the  rustic and cozy decor. Plus, their ready-made pastries and Froccino drinks will always have you keep coming back for more!
