You've probably seen Elyoo's gorgeous work on Instagram, at Restock when part of her The 100 Day Project collection was on display, or on the pages of Candy when we commissioned her to do Hunger Games portraits in her signature style. And if you haven't, we're pleased to introduce you to one of Manila's talented artists. Read on to find out more about her Creative Space.

  1. Introductions first. Who are you, how old are you, and what do you do?

"I'm Elyoo, 30 years old, a freelance graphic designer and illustrator."

  1. How did you first get into art?

"I've always been into art; I don't think that I ever recall a time when art wasn't part of my life. I like learning about artists and their works, trying out new mediums/softwares, playing around with different styles of illustration."

  1. Your style is very distinct but no two pieces look alike! What are the things that inspire your work? And how did you develop your style?

"I get inspired by a lot of things: nature, animals, picture books, graphic novels, vintage/scientific illustrations, embroidery, to name a few. I'm still working on my style and been sketching and experimenting a lot—and the only thing that I am sure at the moment, is that I like whimsical and stylized illustrations."

  1. When is your best time for creating?

"My best time for creating is very early in the morning—when it is quiet and the air is still a bit cool. However, I have always had a hard time going to sleep, so I do end up making the most of of my illustration work late at night."

  1. You work a lot with gouache but I noticed you've been using colored pencils and Copic markers. What are your favorite materials to work with and where do you usually get them?

"I've been experiementing with different mediums at the moment—mostly because I have been traveling and want to try out materials that I can easily bring with me. But gouache will always be my main medium of choice because I just really love how it looks. I have also been playing around with using colored pencils over gouache to give more textures on the finished painting, which I am liking! I'm actually not sure where all these things that I am doing will lead to, but it's fun to play around and incorporate new materials into my work."

"I usually buy my art materials when I travel, but I discovered gouache from Artwhale, a local art seller here in Quezon City. They have also recently opened a shop near my place, which I have yet to visit!"

  1. Any particular fave piece or something you've painted that holds a special memory?

"I think the Iris Apfel portrait is my favorite. I just loved how I was able to put so many small details into that peice. I can never get tired of looking at all the details on that painting."

  1. What's your dream project?
"My ultimate dream is to be able to publish a picture book/children's book. I've had this dream since I was in college, but life got in the way and I'm slowly working on my ideas again recently."
