Creative Space: Alessandra Lanot
Candy DIY Book crafter, restaurateur, and the creative hands behind Life After Breakfast Alessandra Lanot just launched her collaboration with IFEX at Manila Design Week. We caught up with her to explore her Creative Space. Read on to find out more about this designer and crafter whose life literally starts after breakfast.
- Introductions first. Who are you, how old are you, and what do you do?
"I'm Alessandra Lanot, 34, and I'm a pattern designer and crafter."
- Of all the things you do, which one makes you happiest making?
I really enjoy the process of turning my hand-drawn artworks and small watercolored paintings into patterns. And then seeing the patterns printed on paper, fabric, or surfaces multiplies that feeling a thousand times. :P
- What are your favorite art tools and do you have a go-to spot for stocking up?
My favorite tool for sketching is a calligraphy pen with a pointed, flexible nib. For paint, I use a custom Winsor & Newton palette and Dr. Ph Martin's radiant watercolors, and Dr. Ph Martin's Bleed Proof White. These are available at craftcarrot.com. Whenever I travel, I always make it a point to allot time for craft and art supplies shopping! I get really inspired by new art materials. I love experimenting with them and trying out new techniques.
- When is the best time for creating for you?
Early morning, after breakfast. It's actually why I named my blog that way: My life literally starts after breakfast. I'm a morning person!
- Where do you get inspiration for your art?
I'm inspired by local crafts, Philippine garden flowers, and by my trips around the islands. Our country is beautiful!
- Any recent project you've worked on that you can share with us? What can we look forward to?
Blank Slate is a calligraphy and sketching pad that I worked on with IFEX. Together with celebrating my blog LifeAfterBreakfast.ph's 5th year, I launched the pads this weekend with a Pattern & Print showcase at Design Week Philippines!
I'm currently working on pattern design collabs with local fashion and lifestyle brands and craft stores! Will also be holding workshops in LA and SF this January at Au Fudge and Poketo! :) This will be my 3rd year doing workshops in the US, but before that, I have a few more events in Manila before the year ends: Craft Camp Antipolo on November 12 and 13, and a Botanical Watercolor Workshop on November 29.
- What's your ultimate dream collaboration for Life After Breakfast?
I promised myself that I'd learn more about local crafts this year, in hopes to collaborate with our artisans. I'd also love to see my patterns used by local clothing retailers!
- Who do you follow on Instagram for inspiration?
I love the aesthetics of @thejungalow and the ceramic pieces of @lisajunius! Make sure though that instagram is not your only source of inspiration! Pair ideas (not artworks) with your own amazing experiences and beliefs! ;)
