Many of us were still recovering from the Christmas season—in terms of working out and dieting, that is—when the coronavirus quarantine was announced. Yep, just like that, it's diet break season once again.
If you're one of the better ones keeping the routine going, however, hats off to you. But, experts say now might not be such a great time to fast. According to Alissa Rumsey, MS, RD, CSCS, of Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness, intermittent fasting, specifically, can do more worse than good for you right now.
Intermittent fasting yields great results but it does weaken your immune system. And a healthy immune system is exactly what you need to help you overcome COVID-19. Not only that, fasting leaves you with less energy and disturbs regular bowel functions. Plus, let's be real, it's also hard not to binge now that you're at home all day long.
While some say fasting can "reset" your immune system, no extensive studies have been conducted to support this theory.
Now, fasting isn't all bad. You can modify it to be milder by eating during a 10-hour window each day. Of course, consult a dietician to be sure since diets aren't a "one size fits all" type of thing.
