In case you didn’t know, a number of schools offer an Arts & Design track in senior high school! The Arts & Design track prepares its students by equipping them with the skills necessary to pursue a career in the creative industry, may that be performative arts, visual arts, media arts, and the like.
For arts & design students (and even those from different tracks who want to pursue a career in the creative industry!) who want to take up further studies relating to art and design, we made a guide just for you.
Here are 7 college courses in the arts & design field that you can consider:
1. Multimedia Arts
The Multimedia Arts program usually makes use of integrating design and communication with the latest digital technologies available. If you’re not so confident in specializing in just one specific area of the arts, then this might just be the course for you! You can check out the programs of the colleges and universities offering it, such as the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, MAPUA University, and Meridian International College of Business and Arts (MINT).
2. Visual Communication
Visual communication majors are taught how to communicate both verbally and visually through equipping them with the knowledge to understand the language of visual design. The program provides students with fundamental information on materials, art theories, and visual and verbal communication, among others. It also teaches students various art techniques as well as how to utilize digital platforms. If you’re interested in storytelling through design, then this course could be for you! The University of the Philippines-Diliman, Far Eastern University, and Philippine Women’s University are some universities in the Philippines offering this formidable program.
3. Industrial Design
Another great course to consider if you want to pursue a more specific field is Industrial Design. It mainly focuses on teaching students how to integrate functionality and design through the development of usable products. In easier terms, it’s basically preparing students towards a career in product development and design by imparting knowledge on the art of innovation. Although this field is a bit more specific, it still opens doors for many other career opportunities! Some notable universities and colleges who offer an industrial design program are the University of the Philippines-Diliman, University of Santo Tomas, MAPUA University, and the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
4. Interior Design
This course is especially designed for those who want to pursue a career in interior design, so if you see yourself decorating spaces and making them look ~aesthetic~ but functional, then this course is definitely for you! Interior design students are taught design concepts and methods of building interiors, ranging from topics such as visual merchandising all the way to interior landscaping design, among others. You can check out the programs of prestigious schools that specialize in interior design like the Philippine School of Interior Design and SoFA Design Institute.
5. Art Management
You might see yourself working in the field of art curation and you might be into more of the technical side of things. An Arts Management degree will equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills to be proficient in art history, theory, and criticism, as well as training in curatorship, exhibition design, and many more. Not a lot of schools offer this program, but some of the few notable ones that do are De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Ateneo De Manila University.
6. Theater Arts
Artistry can also be expressed through performing arts, such as theater arts. The program is designed to guide students in understanding theater activities both onstage and offstage, from production and direction all the way to acting. The University of the Philippines-Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines are some schools in the Philippines that have holistic theater arts programs.
Passionate about visual storytelling? Then Film is definitely a course to consider! Film students usually learn all the fundamentals of filmmaking, from the history of film, scriptwriting, production techniques, and post-production processes such as video editing. Some prestigious programs in filmmaking can be found in the University of the Philippines-Diliman, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, and the International Academy of Film and Television.
