History of Colegio de San Juan de Letran
There were two similar learning institutions that fused together to form Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL). The first is Colegio de Niños Huerfanos de San Juan de Letran, an orphanage founded in 1620 that aimed to educate its ward into proper Christian citizens. The second is Colegio de Huerfanos de San Pedro y San Pablo, established around the same time. The founders of these two institutions shared a friendship and similar ideals that led them to merge the two establishments in 1630.
Today, it has four colleges under its Undergraduate Program, aside from offering basic education and graduate courses. It also began accepting female students into these undergraduate courses in the 1970s, and has made much progress after opening several research centers, including the Letran Center for Intramuros Studies, in order to establish itself as a leader in historical and cultural knowledge.
