Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical field’s need for healthcare workers has increased at an exponential rate. Likewise, many students have taken it upon themselves to pursue medical school in an effort to meet the industry’s growing demands. While it’s now pretty common to be a nurse or a doctor in the Philippines, there are still numerous medical specializations that are worth considering. For example, veterinary medicine is a good alternative to look into if you’re not willing to spend at least 10 years training to become a human doctor.

Although perceived to be a less conventional career path, being a veterinarian is a rewarding job as well. Apart from helping animals and interacting with fellow animal lovers, veterinarians also get the opportunity to gain professional independence by establishing their very own clinics. Not to mention, the job typically entails a competitive salary, a stable work environment, and a lot of career growth.

Fortunately, there are also numerous educational institutions in the country that offer excellent veterinary courses for aspiring professionals. If you’re thinking about pursuing a career in this promising field, keep reading to learn more about five of the best schools for veterinary in the Philippines.

Established in 1908 as a trailblazer in agriculture and veterinary medicine, the University of the Philippines Los Baños is usually the top-of-mind choice for aspiring veterinarians. In fact, the institution’s College of Veterinary Medicine was actually the country’s first and only veterinary school until 1960. In addition to being named a Center of Excellence by the Commission on Higher Education, the college has also consistently gained the highest passing percentage in the annual Veterinary Licensure Examination. The institution has a Veterinary Teaching Hospital to provide students with hands-on clinical training, as well as an Anatomy Museum and Parasite Collection Center to exhibit various animals and insects for the public’s viewing pleasure.

With the dedicated mission to bring quality service to Filipinos in mind, the Benguet State University inaugurated its College of Veterinary Medicine nearly four decades ago. To guarantee a top-notch and world-class curriculum, their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree regularly undergoes evaluations by CHED, Technical Panel for Agricultural Education, Professional Regulations Commission, and other esteemed accrediting bodies. As such, the university produces graduates who are skilled in treating animal diseases, implementing animal welfare programs, and promoting environmental preservation.

3. Central Luzon State University

While this Nueva Ecija institution originated as a humble farm school, they are now known to be the “mother of vocational agricultural schools” due to its practice-oriented approach to education. Consequently, CHED has already recognized six of its offered programs as Centers of Excellence, including their undergraduate Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Students who opt for this course will be equipped with not only technical knowledge but managerial and entrepreneurial skills as well to ensure a well-rounded training. Moreover, students may also specialize in their preferred major after completing the common curriculum’s simulations and case studies during the first two years of the program.
