Due to the unpredictable post-pandemic job market, many individuals have decided to start their own businesses as a main source of income or a mere side hustle. While the process of establishing a new venture may seem uncomplicated to non-business owners, there are actually a lot of details behind the scenes that go unnoticed. Amidst the competitive and fast-growing startup landscape in the Philippines, it’s a real challenge to keep a business afloat—and even more so to make it grow.

This is exactly why more and more students nowadays consider studying business formally in college. While a business degree (or any degree, for that matter) doesn’t necessarily guarantee success in the cutthroat field, learning about the discipline’s fundamentals can certainly go a long way in running a flourishing enterprise. Needless to say, graduates of this course can also pursue the employee route and be business analysts, management consultants, and project managers. Technicals aside, a business degree can provide people with numerous soft skills that would be useful in any field, including conflict resolution, collaborative communication, and leadership abilities.

If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur in search of a prestigious school, here’s your handy guide to five schools that offer notable business courses in the Philippines:

1. De La Salle University

In 2021, the ASEAN University Network listed DLSU as a top-ranking university for Business & Economics. Apart from this, DLSU was also the sole Philippine university that made it to the 2022 Times Higher Education World Ranking for the same discipline. With the goal of producing competent managers and consultants, the university’s highly-regarded Business Management program teaches students about financial analysis, public relations skills, information systems, and resource management. To ensure that students apply their theoretical knowledge to real-life experiences, students will also be required to complete a portfolio, an internship, and a thesis.

2. Enderun Colleges

When it comes to hospitality and entrepreneurship, Enderun Colleges is a top-tier choice to consider. Although the progressive college was only established last 2005, it has already gained acclaim for their exceptional undergraduate programs. For instance, their Bachelor of Science in Business Administration curriculum rigorously trains aspiring entrepreneurs to build significant enterprises amidst the competitive global industry. Likewise, the program allows students to specialize in one of its five majors: Financial Management, Marketing Management, Operations Management, Technological Management, and Sustainability. In line with the school’s hands-on approach towards education, students will be required to take two internships, with one of them preferably outside of the Philippines.

3. University of Asia and the Pacific

When the Commission on Higher Education granted this institution its university status in 1995, their School of Management was established only a year later. The school now houses their holistic Entrepreneurial Management program, which prepares students to be leaders and innovators in their field. Notably, this is the only program in the country that is specifically made for training aspiring entrepreneurs as early as their adolescent years. Simply put, students will be encouraged to start their own businesses while in school so that their highly-skilled instructors can mentor them with personalized coaching.

4. Ateneo de Manila University

As one of the most prestigious undergraduate degree programs in the university, Ateneo’s Bachelor of Science in Management (Honors) program is only open to those who score in the top 10 percent of the Ateneo College Entrance Test. The four-year course integrates business management and data analytics into Ateneo’s interdisciplinary liberal arts core. As expected from a prestigious university, the program has produced many notable alumni today such as former Secretary of Agriculture Luis Lorenzo and 2001 Philippine Bar Exam 1st Placer Atty. Rodolfo Ma. Panferrada Jr.

5. University of the Philippines - Diliman

The University of the Philippines ranks as the fifth university in Southeast Asia and holds the top place in the country. Given their consistently high rankings, it’s no surprise that the UP Virata School of Business offers two world-class undergraduate programs that attract many future business professionals. While the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accountancy is a five-year course that specializes in financial management, their Business Administration program is a four-year alternative that focuses on honing corporate skills. For both courses, however, students can expect to be trained in strategic management, business administration, and finance.
