8 of the Best Courses to Take at Mapua University

Mapúa University takes pride in being the Philippines’ premier engineering and technological school. After being founded by Don Tomas Mapúa, the first registered architect in the country, Mapúa University has produced many professionals that specialized in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) field.

The university’s undergraduate programs are also recognized by different local and international accreditation bodies. Mapúa is the first ever school in Southeast Asia to obtain accreditation from the United States-based Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for multiple of their Engineering courses.Not only that, but the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has also dubbed the school’s various programs—mostly Engineering courses and Information Technology courses—as Centers of Excellence.

1. BS Biological Engineering

FYI, Mapúa is the first and only school in the Philippines that offers Biological Engineering as a college program. It’s essentially  the program that started the engagement between life sciences, and the fundamentals of engineering. BSBE also includes the fusion of different fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, engineering and mathematics. The program also offers advanced biology courses such as genetics, molecular, cell biology, physiology and biophysics.

2. BS Chemical Engineering

Mapúa actually provided the first Chemical Engineering Program in the Philippines. It was only in June 1937 that the university produced the first batch of graduates of Chemical Engineering in the country. Today, the Chemical Engineering Program of Mapúa University is home to one of the largest in the country. Notable alumni from the college and course would be Wilfredo Jose, a Chemistry professor at the University of the Philippines who was named  the Outstanding Chemical Engineer of the Year Award in 2007 by the Professional Regulations Commission. Another alumnus is Alfonso Supetran, the founder of ACS Manufacturing Corporation.

3. BS Civil Engineering

BS Civil Engineering in Mapúa is an outcomes-based program which covers structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering, construction engineering and management, and environmental engineering. Graduates from this program can expect a career in construction management, geotechnical engineering, environmental/water resources engineering, or structural engineering.

4. BS Computer Engineering

For the computer-savvy, Mapúa’s BS Computer Engineering is  your best bet! The course introduces their students to the fundamentals of computer components, communication, and information technology. The university promises their graduates to have an understanding of computer hardware and software, computer architecture, microprocessors, computer programming using machine level and high-level languages, data communications, computer networks, and operating systems.

5. BS Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering in Mapúa can be your go-to course if you find yourself interested in learning all about the study and usage of technology through applied science, involving electrical phenomena.The program’s curriculum also covers  ??power electronics, industrial automation, principles of communications, electromagnetics, entrepreneurship, short circuits, and dynamic solutions.A notable alumni from this course  is Dado Banatao, who is often called “the Philippines’ Bill Gates” due to his success in the tech industry. There’s also Leon Chua who was recognized as part of the Top 15 most cited Authors in Engineering Award from 1991 to 2001.

6. BS Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering is a program that integrates technical engineering education with technology-related and management disciplines.The college course also focuses on mathematics, physical sciences, information technology, quality engineering, systems engineering, logistics and supply chain, production systems, ergonomics, and optimization, allowing  students to be experts in both the technical and managerial fields of work.

7. BS Environmental and Sanitary Engineering

The Environmental and Sanitary Engineering program combines  the disciplines of civil engineering and the principles of ecology, chemistry, and microbiology. The course also aims to cover the applications of engineering to promote hygiene, sanitation, and public health to protect and conserve the environment.

8. BS Architecture

Gerardo Magat, an alumnus from this Mapúa course, actually the country’s highest-scorer in the Philippine architecture board examination! Mapúa University is also a frequent school in the examination’s top ten scorers. Up until the most recent exam, Mapúa had an impressive passing rate of  84.31%, with 43 out of 51 students passing the exams.
