In 1916, BSU was first called La Trinidad Farm School, and there were only a total of 30 fifth- graders at the time. Their university website reported that the school initially planned to become a large normal school where Igorot children can be trained to be educators for their own community.

Continuing to 1920 where 188 students enrolled for their first year in high school, it was renamed into the Trinidad Agricultural School. After the 1946 war, they reopened their doors and became the La Trinidad Agricultural High School. In 1953, the provincial normal curriculum was diminished and they began to offer a two-year post-high school certificate in agricultural education.

Shortly after that, it was reinstated as the Mountain National College (MNAC), then Mountain Agricultural College (MAC). In 1969, the school was converted to a state college as per RA 5923, so it was renamed to the Mountain State Agricultural College (MSAC).

In 1986, it got converted once more and became a state university when Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed the Presidential Decree (PD) No. 2010. Finally, it became what it is called today: Benguet State University.
