Are you considering what it’s like to be a true Blue Eagle and (one day) call Ateneo de Manila University your own alma mater? Before filling up that application form, here’s everything you need to know about Ateneo and its undergraduate programs:
History of Ateneo de Manila University
The Ateneo de Manila is one of the oldest Jesuit-run institutions of higher learning in Asia, with over 150 years. Dating all the way back to 1859, Ateneo de Manila University began as Escuela Municipal de Manila, a public primary school in Intramuros established by Spanish Jesuits. Once a private school for Spanish residents, Escuela became Ateneo Municipal de Manila in 1865 and offered courses in secondary education, such as certificates in agriculture, business, and surveying. After the American colonization, Ateneo Municipal lost its government subsidy. In 1909, it became a private institution now with the name, Ateneo de Manila. The initial Intramuros campus was destroyed by a fire, and later transferred to Padre Faura. During the war, the campus was ravaged again and temporarily reopened in Plaza Guipit, Sampaloc, Manila. After reconstruction, the university moved back to its Padre Faura campus.
In 1952, Ateneo was moved to a campus along Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, in Quezon City, and the Padre Faura campus housed the professional schools until 1976. The Ateneo undergraduate programs welcomed female students in 1973, while it co-founded the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in 1968. Aside from the main campus, there are two other campuses in Rockwell Center and Salcedo Village that house the graduate programs in business, government, and law, and a fourth campus in Ortigas Center, Pasig for the school of medicine and public health.
