Ever since the Spanish colonial era, Assumption College has been making waves in women’s education, producing admirable alumni in various fields. If you’re considering this fine institution as your future alma mater, learn about its history, the courses it’s known for, and other considerations before beginning your college journey:
History of Assumption College
Pioneering women’s education in the Philippines, Assumption College (AC) dates all the way back to Spanish Colonization. Sent by the Queen Regent of Spain in 1892, Marie Eugenie, founder of the Religious of the Assumption, directed the Superior Normal School for women teachers in Manila. This would unfortunately close due to the Philippine revolution in 1898. Recognizing its value, Pope Pius X requested a group of English-speaking Assumption Sisters return to Manila and reopen the boarding school in 1904 in Herran, Manila. This was later expanded to Iloilo in Western Visayas and a college department added to both schools. Tragedy struck when the Herran convent and school were burned down during the 1945 Liberation but reopened in the same year at the request of the alumni.Â
The Assumption continued to expand and opened the San Jose Academy, Sta. Rita Academy, and the St. Martin de Porres Grade School in Baguio. And in 1958, another Assumption School was built in San Lorenzo Village, Makati which presently stands as the women’s college we’ve come to know.
