History of Misamis University
The first private high school in this nation's region was established in June 1929 when Dr. Hilarion T. Feliciano and his wife, Doa Maria Mercado Feliciano, founded Kolambugan Academy in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte. The school's location moved to Misamis–now called Ozamiz City—after two years to serve a larger population better. The institution then became known as Misamis Institute.
During the Second World War, school operations got suspended. The school reopened in 1946 when the government recognized the full range of Elementary and Secondary academic programs. In 1953, the founders started an expansion program in law, commerce, liberal arts, and education, which all received full government recognition. In 1955, the school changed its name to Misamis Colleges.
Dr. Hilarion T. Feliciano obtained Mindanao Academy in Oroquieta City in 1967 and ran it as a branch of Misamis Colleges, driven by his commitment to offering high-quality education to the people of Misamis Occidental. In 1982, the institution changed its name to Misamis University, Oroquieta Unit.
The university has consistently addressed the difficulties of providing high-quality education in various specialized subjects. Thus, the university was granted a Deregulated Status by CHED. Within the same year, the institution got the recognition of an Autonomous Status.
