PSA: Ateneo de Manila University just won the 2023 World Universities Debating Championship in Spain earlier today. Held at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, the largest international debating tournament in the world was hosted by the World Universities Debating Council from December 27 to January 4.

The Ateneo team was led by Tobi Leung and David Africa, who are both taking up BS Applied Mathematics at the university. They managed to best numerous teams from other prestigious institutions, including Princeton University of America, Tel Aviv University of Israel, and Sofia University of Bulgaria.

Aside from winning the tournament's top prize, Tobi and David were also named the 2nd Best Speaker and the 8th Best Speaker in the world. Cool!

Fun fact: Ateneo is actually the first-ever Philippine university that has bagged this championship, as well as the second Asian university to do so. Prior to this, the only university in Asia that garnered the highest prize was a team from BRAC University in Dhaka, Bangladesh last year.

Since the tournament is widely considered as the "Olympics of debating," it's safe to say that this win is one for the history books! Congrats, Ateneo team!
