The United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism, so here's a short list of places you can go to when you need to get away from everything. Of course, everything on this list is budget-friendly!
- Taytay Falls - Majayjay, Laguna
If you're looking for a getaway near Manila, then Taytay Falls is the place to be! There's a bit of a trek before you get to the falls, but I promise you it's worth it. The falls
- Pandin Lake - San Pablo, Laguna
People who love water will love it here. Just like Taytay Falls, you don't need a big budget to enjoy this beautiful body of water because there is no entrance fee. You can ride bamboo rafts, which can cost you P1,200/person if you include food. But if you don't have that kind of budget, you can just opt to stay overnight for around P100 or so. Aside from Pandin Lake, there's also Lake Yambo on the other side, which is why there are bamboo rafts for rent. What's good about this trip is it's just a few hours away from Manila!
- Taal Basilica - Taal, Batangas
If you don't want to get wet or are scared of the water, then maybe church-hopping is the one for you. Lipa and Taal are home to grand churches which boast of beautiful architecture and heritage. You can visit Taal Basilica—the biggest basilica in Asia—or the sacred well of Sta. Lucia. Explore the beautiful churches and take lots of pictures because you won't be paying anything except for transportation!
- Taal Volcano - Taal, Batangas
Taal Volcano is the smallest volcano in the world and you have the option to trek and see it up close! If you like hikes or treks, then you should go to Taal ASAP. Batangas is only a few hours from Manila and the transportation expenses are relatively cheap, which means it's a good destination for those looking for a day trip adventure. Just remember to bring sunscreen and lots of water because even though it's not as steep, the sun is usually out and about.
