There are a lot of reasons why we overeat, and one of those is because we don't really pay attention to the food we consume. Without knowing it, we've finished a whole bag of chips while watching an episode of our fave show or devoured a big chocolate bar while studying. Below, celebrity nutritionist Nadine Tengco shares three tips—in her own words—straight from her book, Sexy at Any Age, to mindful eating.

  1. Eat at least one healthy meal without distractions.

Turn off the TV, put away your mobile phone and gadgets, magazines, etc. As you take your first few bites, notice not just the taste but also the smells, sounds (crackle, crunch, etc.), textures, colors, and how your mind reacts to them. 

  1. Chew slowly, thoroughly, and in small bites.

Eating slowly allows you to receive satiety cues from your brain. Eating smaller bites lets you fully experience your food. It slows down the rate of digestion, which also minimizes blood sugar spikes.

  1. Honor the food.

Express gratitude and appreciation for the good that it gives your body. Silently thank Mother Earth and all the living beings that contributed to your nourishment. Think of all the steps it took to make your food and honor all the people involved in each step.
