One of the most important apps for many students during online classes is Zoom. From synchronous classes to online hangouts with friends to study sessions with strangers, the app has become a vital part of our routine. But even though we've been using Zoom for quite a while now, there's still a lot we probably haven't discovered about how it can be maximized.

Below, we list down three important Zoom hacks every student will find useful:

Mute yourself upon entering the meeting

Every time we enter a meeting, our mic is turned on by default. And sometimes, we don't want to make a fuss in a Zoom room full of students by drawing attention to ourselves and having everyone else hear unnecessary background noise from our end. To automatically mute yourself before you even enter the meeting, go to Settings on the desktop version of Zoom, click Audio, and then choose “Mute my microphone when joining a meeting.”

Temporarily unmute yourself

It's hard to keep track of whether or not we're on mute, especially if we have to do it several times to recite or ask a question. At some point, you might have experienced accidentally leaving yourself unmuted while loudly munching on some snacks in class. To avoid this, you can always just keep yourself on mute through out the whole duration of your Zoom session, and just press and hold the spacebar to temporarily unmute yourself. To enable this push-to-talk feature on Zoom, go to Settings, click Audio, and then make sure that the "Press and hold SPACE key to temporarily unmute yourself" option is checked.

Manage background noise

Dogs barking and keyboard keys clacking are staple sounds in every Zoom room. By default, Zoom already minimizes background noise to make sure only the relevant audio is heard. But if you wish to further control just how much or how little background noise is being filtered, you can change the settings for it. To do so, go to Settings, and then Audio, and then choose Advanced. From there, you can change the settings for "Suppress Persistent Background Noise" and "Suppress Intermittent Background Noise" to Auto, Moderate, Aggressive, or Disable.
