Of Tears And Cheese: A Guy's Thoughts While Watching A Tearjerker With You

Honestly, guys would prefer Godzilla. But fine, we'll watch The Notebook with you!

There's an ever-present stereotype which media always presents to us: guys don’t like cheesy, tearjerker romance films. To some extent, that's true. If given a choice between Godzilla and The Notebook, most guys would pick Godzilla. I mean, when we’re out with the bros, a giant laser-blasting lizard thing will always win the vote over a film about a Nicholas Sparks book.

However, when we’re out with the bae, it's a totally different battlefield. Nicholas Sparks' book-film will win—hands-down. Clearly, romantic tearjerkers like A Walk to Remember or The Fault In Our Stars won't be our first choice. But when we're forced—err—"politely asked" to watch them, here are the 10 things that are going on in our heads:

1. Initial Reaction: Fingers Crossed. With our fingers crossed, we're always saying, "Please, please, please, be funny" because we don't want to look like a wimp beside our dates. Not that we cry when watching romance films. We're very—um—manly.

2. Lead Girl: Wow! We see the lead girl and say, "What's her name again?" But what we really mean is, "Oh man, she’s so pretty! Forget funny! I don't regret accepting to watch this movie!"

3. Lead Guy: Umm... Then a wild Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, or Zac Efron appears and we're just like: "Why can't I be that good looking???" *insert endless list of insecurities here*

4. Lead Guy Makes Date Kilig: HUHUHUHU! A melancholic river flows deep within the depths of our hearts when we see that the spark in her eyes isn’t because of us. True story.

5. Seeing Our Date Enjoying: WIN. We glance at our dates from time to time. When she smiles, we smile.

6. The Story Progresses: It's not bad. Here's where we sort of start to swallow our pride and say, "Hey, it's actually not that bad." and we start to enjoy the movie, too. Okay, it's mostly because she's enjoying it, but the movie is probably not that bad.

7. Climactic Tearjerker Scene: Gotta Man Up! Yes, we feel the sadness. Most guys won't admit this but we cry almost as much as girls do when the tearjerker scenes come in, but on the inside—ONLY on the inside. Or not.

8. Date Needs Comforting: Score! This is probably the best part... of the movie! "Don't worry, I'll be a shoulder you can cry on." *GRINS*

9. Falling Action: This is nice. Whether the movie is leading up to a happy ending or a sad one, her head leaning on our shoulder is very euphoric. Oh and yeah, the film is nice, too.

10. Ending: I enjoyed that. In the end, a lot of guys (if not all) will end up laughing about how stupid we were to not want to watch the movie because we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

More often than not, when we watch these romance films with the girl we like, it's not really a matter of personal preference. Most of us would still pick The Avengers over The Fault In Our Stars if given a choice. Ultimately, we choose to watch these films because we prefer the company over the movie. To borrow words from my friend, "[Guys are] not really looking to enjoy the movie; it's the time you spend with each other that [they] look forward to."
