Moving on from a past relationship is never easy. Regardless of how long you two have been together, this process doesn't have an expiration date. It's a messy and heartbreaking process of re-adjusting your life and getting used to being on your own again. But even though this phase can be challenging, it definitely becomes easier when you're surrounded by family and friends who are ready to keep you calm and sane while rebooting your life. Let's admit this, though, that even if you appreciate the efforts and intentions of the people around you, there are just things they tell you that sting and annoy you. So whether you're the one moving on from the breakup or are comforting a friend who's going through this right now, here's a list that can help you. Good luck, Candy Girls!
1 It was his loss anyway.
What your friend thinks: A loss is still a loss no matter who dumped who or who deserved what.
Why don't you try this line: I'm sorry you had to go through a breakup.
2 It's just a breakup. It's not like the end of the world.
What your friend thinks: It's not the end of the world, but it's the end of the world as I knew it.
Why don't you try this line: I'm sorry that this happened to both of you.
3 There are other fish in the sea.
What your friend thinks: If finding a replacement was that easy, I would be in a new relationship by now.
Why don't you try this line: I know you really love him, even until now.
4 You'll find someone better.
What your friend thinks: I thought I had the best with my ex so the sound of finding something better isn't really comforting.
Why don't you try this line: We should go out!
5 Think positive.
What your friend thinks: What do you think I've been trying to do for the past few weeks already?
Why don't you try this line: Look at you, you're still standing after everything. That's a good thing.
6 Hey, I have this friend. You'll really like him.
What your friend thinks: No, thank you. I should be busy getting rest and all, not using someone else as distraction.
Why don't you try this line: We should do something to make you smile!
7 You won't be given something you can't handle.
What your friend thinks: Then why does it feel like I'm running out of energy to handle this stage of my life already?
Why don't you try this line: You'll get out of this as a stronger and better person, just you wait.
8 Nothing lasts forever.
What your friend thinks: Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Please don't make me lose my faith in humanity and relationships.
Why don't you try this line: This is just a series of bad days and not a bad life, don't worry.
9 It was bound to happen.
What your friend thinks: EXCUSE YOU.
Why don't you try this line: I know he's hurt you but I also know you really loved him.
10 It's been so long. You should be over it by now.
What your friend thinks: Who said pain and heartbreak have expiration dates?
Why don't you try this line: I believe in you and you'll get through this.
Truth is, when you're moving on, you just need someone to listen to you and assure you that you can take all the time you want and need when going through this process. Don't push yourself or someone to get past the heartbreak fast.
