We're sure that by now, you've already watched (and LOLed!) this anti-littering campaign by students from the Ateneo de Manila University. It's also a parody of the iconic anti-piracy video which cinemas show at the beginning of every movie screening, starring Derek Ramsey and Gaby dela Merced. But in case you haven't, here's the video:
Aside from it being a good source of laughs, we also can't deny the fact that it's an effective campaign against littering—which all of us are guilty of, whether you admit it or not! It's a good thing that college students made the initiative to do one also, because it will inspire more young people (like you, Candy Girls!) to go and speak up about important topics in the country.
So when we saw that one of our favorite Candy Cuties, Benchsetter Neil Dy, starred in the video, we just had to ask him a few things about how they came up with this video! Hear his thoughts below and take note of his encouragement for the youth to speak up about issues in the country.
- How did you and your team come up with the campaign video?
"To be honest, it all started as a joke! The video was a collaboration between two food stalls in Ateneo: Between the Buns, which sells chicken schnitzel sandwiches and gourmet popcorn, and Colloquial Coffee, a third wave cold-brew coffee company (you can actually see the Between the Buns food stall in the last scene). Both stalls are owned by two different groups of students but we all happen to be good friends.
"Around December of last year, we noticed that the Derek Ramsey anti-piracy campaign was getting attention again, so we decided to take a crack at it. Our incredibly talented friend, Niko Tiutan, a co-owner of Colloquial Coffee, has been producing videos for a couple years now and immediately agreed when we pitched the idea to him. After that, everything just fell into place so fast! We filmed on a weekend and by the following Monday, the video was up!
- What was the response after you uploaded the video on social media? Did you expect it to get the attention it's been getting?
"At first, we expected it to go around Ateneo only. We thought it'd be shared by our friends just like any other college promotion. We had no idea that it would go viral. The overall response was exciting but at the same time humbling."
- What other campaigns are you planning to do in the future?
"I guess it depends on what issues need attention in the future! Let's see!"
- What other advocacies or issues do you think should the youth take part in?
"I think it really doesn't matter how small or big the issue or advocacy is. As long as you are able to make an impact and send your message across even through just a simple parody like what we did. For now, I believe that the ones that need attention are issues regarding health and social justice. But I'm sure there are a lot more!"ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
