While you can choose practically any style for your gown, do remember that part of looking great in your debut gown is wearing a style that suits your body type. We've rounded up the dress silhouettes that would complement your figure.

Hourglass

The hourglass is perhaps the easiest shape to dress, because the hips and the bust are already well-proportioned. Debutantes with hourglass shapes can choose from a variety of dresses, and they can even get away with trickier gown cuts like the mermaid. Classic silhouettes like the A-line would also flatter the hourglass.

Other than staying away from dresses with too much detailing, or those that make them top or bottom-heavy, hourglass debutantes can wear most debut dress styles.

Inverted Triangle

With a bustline bigger than the hips, debutantes with inverted triangle shapes need to divert attention from their top half. Debutantes can opt for details on the skirt like beading, or fuller skirt silhouettes to strike balance with a heavy top. A gown with a drop waist will also give the debutante a leaner appearance.

Debutantes in this shape should steer clear of debut dresses with too-low or too-high necklines, as these would only draw more attention to a heavy top.

Pear

Debutantes with pear shapes should draw attention to the top half, so gowns with detailed necklines or beaded bodices would be great options. A debut dress with an empire waist is also a good choice because it de-emphasizes the hips. A gown with an A-line skirt would also work well.

Unforgiving gown styles include those that emphasize the bottom even more through heavy detailing or bustles Pear-shaped debutantes should stay away from mermaid-style skirts, too.

Rectangle

Debutantes with rectangle shapes need to create an illusion of curves. A debut dress with an empire waist softens the otherwise straight lines of the body, plus it gives the debutante delineation between the bustline and the waistline. Wearing a ball gown is also a good way to emphasize the bottom half.

Debutantes with this figure should stay away from vertical details on the debut dress, as these only make the figure more boyish.
