Grade 12 student Hans Kasilag aspires to become a lawyer one day. He pursued theĀ Humanities and Social Sciences strand in senior high school and hopes to enter law school in the future. Because of his dedication, Hans is already gearing up for law school as early as now by asking top lawyers for some helpful advice.
In September, Hans reached out to human rights lawyerĀ Atty. Chel Diokno to seek advice, and to his delight, the lawyer happily sent back his words of wisdom. Now, Hans is eager to learn more from other sources in the field, including former senator and currently governor of Sorsogon Francis "Chiz" Escudero. The 12th grade student also got a response from Escudero and here's his advice:
"Aspiring to become a lawyer means you need to study hard. It is not only about memorizing laws or being able to argue or debate about certain issues. You need to develop good study habits, patience, and focus. One must also learn to love what you are reading.
"Know that in choosingĀ your career, you need toĀ discover the reason on why you want it. One must understand the importance of being a lawyer. Being a lawyer is not just about prestige and glam. When you become a lawyer, you are in a position to help individuals, groups, and organizations, especially those who are oppressed and abused. As a lawyer, you have the opportunity to give voice to the voiceless and to stand up for those who are wronged.
"Life gives us choices. And from these choices, we need to make decisions. Every day, from the moment we wake up, we need to make decisions from the simplest question of 'what should I wear?' or 'what should I eat?' and in making decisions, especially about our careers, we need to consider several factors: what are my interests? Where do I excel? Do not feel pressured if there is no answer to these questions. Because our life itself is a journey and discovery. We truly discover what we really want through experiences--through our success and especially through our failures.
"Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Because mistakes teach us lessons. Do not be afraid to fail, for failures are important for us to grow and to find out truly who we are. Always be guided that one must counter the waves in order to succeed and no matter how cruel the society is, always choose to be kind."Ā
