The 2019 SEA Games officially opened on November 30, 2019 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan which showcased the Philippine culture in the most festive way possible. The players and teams from all the participating countries showed up and proudly paraded to rep their respective nations.
For the Philippines, some of the players repping the flag might look familiar to you—you’ve probably seen them compete in the UAAP, too! Below, we round up five student-athletes participating in this year’s SEA Games.
Eya Laure, UST
Eya Laure joins the women's volleyball team competing on behalf of the country. She also plays for the UST Golden Tigresses, the same school her older sister EJ Laure played for.
Jarvey Gayoso, ADMU
The Ateneo forward joins the U-22 football team repping the Philippines in the SEA Games. He's also one of the star players of UAAP football and was last season's MVP.
Sacho Ilustre, DLSU
This Green Archer was Rookie of the Year in UAAP Season 81 before bagging the MVP award later on in Season 82. Now, he will represent the Philippines in swimming.
AJ Arcilla, ADMU
The UAAP 81 Best Goalkeeper awardee joins Ateneo teammate Jarvey in the lineup for the Philippines' football team in this year's SEA Games.
Pocholo Bugas, FEU
This Baby Tamaraw has been making waves as early as the UAAP Juniors tournament. He scored the winning goal that led his team to take home their ninth consecutive UAAP Juniors title. His older brother Paolo Bugas also played for FEU in his collegiate years.
