Erwin Macua, who has been working as a security guard at St. Theresa's College in Cebu City for almost 20 years, graduates cum laude on Saturday, March 25, hence earning a Bachelor of Elementary Education in General Education.
"The 38-year-old Macua—who hails from Trinidad, Bohol—juggled being a security guard, studying, and being a father of three children," reports Annie Perez on ABS-CBN News Online.
The report notes: "Macua initially used his meager savings to pay for his first year in college and was lucky enough to be sponsored by an anonymous donor for his remaining years in school."
Asked for words of advice, Macua said: "Age is not a hindrance. Poverty is not a hindrance. Just pursue your dream with this formula: hard work plus determination plus prayer and you will reach your aspirations in life."
The report added that Macua "plans to continue his work as a security guard while self-reviewing for the licensure exams for teachers."
Macua credits his wife for giving him the strength to finish his course. "I am very happy that my family, my wife, is very understanding," he told Cebu Daily News.
