Mich and Mom

Coming in for her Candy shoot with her beautiful head of curls, her distinct style, and a pair of shoes only a true fashionista can pull off, there's no doubt 22-year-old Mich Dulce is the hot designer du jour. She designs the Donita line for Fila, and has just embarked on a new career as a costume designer in movies (check out her designs in the latest John Prats and Heart Evangelista flick). And all this is thanks to Mom.

"My mom is a huge influence. She's not a designer, but she was always making clothes. People would literally buy them out of her closet. I grew up seeing that. I think Mom knew I'd pick it up."

And pick it up, she did. Despite having zero plans of going into fashion, her mom's passive influence won out. "I started making clothes in college because there were very few shops that had clothes I'd want to wear. Soon after, a lot of people were ordering from me."

After a brief stint designing for Milkwear, she realized this was the career path she wanted to follow. "I enjoyed it, so I kept doing it. That's when I realized this is what I really want to do. So I went to London to study."

She stresses the importance of education. "Because at the end of the day, it's a craft that has to be mastered. It's really the best way to ensure you'll do well in any career. Education gives you adequate training."

She also emphasizes the value of having people who believe in her, especially during stressful times. "My mom encouraged me even when I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it. But whatever I decided to do, she was very helpful. We're only two in the family. My dad died when I was five. She can read me...just little things like when I'm tired, she'll show me my magazine clippings to cheer me up. When I'm exhausted, she's there to catch me." She adds, "I'm lucky. There are so many things that could have gotten me sidetracked, but I have a supportive mom so everything worked out. She's really a big factor in my career. Without her encouragement, I could never have gotten to where I am today."
